Split Thread Overthrow of Allende - CIA conspiracy?

And because someone has to point it out, and it's usually me, let's not forget the importance of the Cold War in this scenario.

"Cold War" was a relative term. The US and the USSR were actually at war, it was just fought mostly via proxies in the developing world in order to prevent the inevitable escalation into nuclear armeggedon a more traditional war would have caused. That's kind of the thing, when the alternative is causing a massive extinction level event, mucking around in other people's countries really doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

Allende was NOT overthrown by the CIA nor did they assist the coup in any way (read: https://www.cia.gov/library/reports/general-reports-1/chile/index.html) . He was overthrown by Pinochet on the orders of the Chamber of Deputies for being an authoritarian who sought to destroy the constitution (Read: Chamebr of Deputies Resolution).
The CIA planned the overthrow of Allende, regardless of whether other parties also planned it. The CIA supported the Government Junta with a propaganda campaign immediately following the coup.

The US government has acknowledged this for over a decade. Denying it is madness.

Gazpacho, i dont deny that the CIA backed the Junta after the coup. Those claims in the link are consistent with the CIA's IG report in 2000. The plans were in the 1970 coup attempt which was bungled.

You can look at it in that abstract way, or you can stick to the more tangible interpretation that both the US and the USSR were at war with other countries, and the goal was control of those countries per se.

No, there were plans and operations after that too.

You appear to be arguing on one hand for no CIA involvement and on the other that Allende was a KGB place man. I find it less than credible that the CIA would not have taken an active interest in KGB involvement on the American continent - whether the stories were with foundation or not.

The US did back anti-left political interests in Chile and there was dismay in the Whitehouse when Allende won in 1970. However it was Pinochet who conducted the military coup in true S American style albeit with the blessing of Kissenger - but it was nevertheless Pinochet who carried out the deed.

CIA involvement was not some bizarre conspiracy it was just plain Cold War real politik and not all that secret.

Perhaps we could advance the discussion if we could define what everyone means by "CIA involvement."
