Merged Osama bin Laden dead,

Let's gloat a little bit more...

Uh... okay, apparently I'm the only one who thinks this means nothing. Just because they killed the leader of Al Quaeda doesn't mean Al Quaeda is gonna stop. This isn't some old cannibal tribe that stops fighting if they kill their boss. If anything, Al Quaeda now has a reason for revenge.

I understand your cynicism, but taking out the leader was not a trivial thing to do. Politically, it scores a whole lot of brownie points, and in the reality, well, it just shows Al-Qaeda that the USA's intelligence is improving and that not even their leader is safe. So I say, let them celebrate for a bit. :)

Also, this is the opportunity for many lolpics, such as the ones we've seen so far, plus this one I like:

:D

The part of the news I enjoy the most are the funny pics... does this make me a bad person? :boxedin:

One of the first commentaries I heard said that there's nobody in Al Qaeda "big enough" to step into the role as symbol. We'll see...

Ayman al-Zawahiri almost certianly is. However at this point he's pretty much the last of the legacy al-Qaeda leaders left standing.

I am not sure which celebrations in the Middle East you are referring to that were complained about, but certainly the celebrations after Osama's death are justified. I don't think they will be complained about much, by anyone with much weight.

The 9/11/01 celebrations, of course.

Additionally there seem to be celebrations and candy whenever a jew is killed in a terrorist op, such as the massacre of that family recently. They are not paid much attention to here, it seems.

But specifically the 9/11 ones that were heavily broadcast here in the US as evidence of what rotten folks the muslims were.

Here's what I'm wondering

1.) Since this will get nonstop media attention round the clock to the exclusion of everything else: What will the government do while none of us are looking? Will they ram unpopular bills through.

They could ram through the internet kill switch, they could ram through some kind of online national ID card system (which they had proposed requiring all citizens to have an ID card to go online), and so forth.

2.) Could this be used to justify all of the ugliest policies of both Administrations. After all, Osama's dead, and they might argue that the Patriot Act, Torture, Warrantless Wiretapping, and rendition were instrumental. The Patriot act will get renewed without opposition.

What are your opinions?

I think that the US government now has more time and energy to hunt down terrorist sympathizers at home.

3.) Will terrorists try to take a whack at us in revenge for the loss of their leader?

Which leaders death were they avenging on 9/11/2001?

No matter how I die, it was murder. Should I disappear, it's obvious who did it ;)

This is disgusting and offensive. I don't know why you keep posting it.

Big Picture: Al Qaeda. It perhaps means nothing overall.
Smaller Picture: 9/11. The main reason most wanted him IMO. It means a lot. Ask some of the victims families what they feel it means.

Symbolism. It cuts both ways. Their symbol of resistance just got shot in the head.

If there was a Hell, I hope he'd rot in it.

It's not going to make much sort term difference to the on the ground activities of al-Qaeda franchise groups. PR wise it's not good though. The ultimate thumb in the eye for the US is now gone.

Just do a Google search on Osama Bin Laden's dead body. It's the second pic on the images page.

any photos are rubbish. No photo will be released for quite some time....much to the delight of the conspiracy theorists.

Osama Not really dead....Living with Elvis.....you heard it here first!

True. I don't deny it means a huge victory for the 911 victims, emotionally speaking.

That popular photo is pretty clearly a photoshop, imo.

You can look at other photos of Bin Laden and see that he should look much older. Check the wiki photo from a 1997 interview, for example.

There's also a 2007 or earlier still where Bin Laden has considerably more gray hair than in the supposed death photo.

What, they don't have hair dye in Pakistan?

I have no idea whether the photo is real. But the fact that his hair isn't grey is hardly disqualifying.

He doesn't seem to color his hair, but it's not just the hair.

Look at the progression from pic to pic. He looks quite young in the death photo. He looks much like the 1997 wiki pic.
