People should decide for themselves what they want to do to their bodies or not. Banning anything won't help in the long run.
It's OK if they ban smoking in public buildings (as in governmental buildings where people must go to, for whatever reason, or (underground) trains/stations, etc.) and shops. However, it should be left up to the owner of pubs or restaurants if they want to allow smoking or not. There surely will be enough places who have a no-smoke policy, so the argument of the non-smokers that leaving it up to the owner would in some way harm/discriminate them is nonsense. They can go where there is no smoking, and smokers can go where there is smoking.
While i'm a smoker myself, i never have any tobacco with me when i go to a restaurant, concert, friends, etc. I like smoking, but i can do without outside my own 4 walls. Also, i usually don't smoke if i have non-smoking friends around, if i know that they are not comfortable with that. It's simply a matter of courtesy.
The whole smoke/no-smoke "discussion" has become somewhat militant quite a while ago, at least from what i observe here in Germany sometimes. To each their own. Wanting to live in a free society simply includes that people other than me must have their freedom as well, no matter if i agree with what they do with it or not.
Greetings,
Chris
