The book in question is a true story about the Royal Navy aircraft carrier the Arc royal. Written by one of the officers (equivalent of the regimental sergeant major stereotype) the story is actually about man management.
Plot - Upon commissioning the ship the RN proceeded to select the cream of the crop to man the ship – the result is a floating disaster, with humours and often tragic consequences.
Have you tried plugging what you remember about the book into Amazon's search thing?
