The incident is a couple days old but evidences are being revealed which show that the claim of armed robbery in Rio may be a fabricated story.

The swimmers have given conflicting statements and the timelines given are messed up. Now there is video of them arriving back at the Olympic Village after they were robbed. They had to pass through X-ray and the video seems to show that they still have the things that they say were stolen (wallets). Additionally, their demeanor is happy and joking around with each other. Not acting like one might expect for guys who were just robbed at gunpoint.

Cops recently came to the Olympic Village with search warrants and to seize passportd but the swimmers were already gone. It seems that Ryan Lochte is already back in the USA and is out of reach for Rio authorities, but Jimmy Feigen may still be in Brazil. Rio cops are trying to solve this whether it be authentic or a hoax.

DailyMail said:
Police in Brazil arrived at the Olympic Village on Wednesday to seize the passports of Ryan Lochte and Jimmy Feigen in an attempt to keep them in the country for further questioning about the robbery they claim occurred early Sunday.

A judge gave authorities the go ahead after doubts began to grow over the claims made by the swimmers in light of the surveillance video obtained by DailyMail.com earlier this week showing the group laughing and smiling as they returned to the Olympic Village...

Records retrieved by investigators from the X-ray machine through which the athletes passed in the Village also showed that the men were carrying all the belongings which they had claimed in sworn statements to police had been stolen...

Lochte in particular was pretty much posting about not complying when the gunmen told him to get down on the ground. Very macho.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the "robbers" were real police who stopped the cab for whatever reasons and were pissed off by the behavior of the arrogant (and probably drunk) Americans.

Then again, Brazil has been known to try to save face, as the did in the case of the mid-air collision probably caused by their inept ATC system.

One swimmer says there were multiple robbers and another says there was only one.

The video shows that they still have wallets, watches, and cellphones.

My suspicion:

They went looking for drugs and/or prostitutes, the deal went bad for one reason or another, and they're using this to "explain" their absence/missing stuff/bruises/whatevs.

They said they left the party at 4am. They arrived at the Village X-ray at 7am. Cops want to know what happened in those 3 hours because the cab ride and the robbery don't account for the big time gap.

Lochte got out of the country but Feigen might be stuck with the cops looking for him. Charges for false statements to cops there can result in a 3 year prison sentence.

That was my gut reaction as well. But, dammit man - how hard is it to get your stories straight? And, why not simply say "we got turned around on our way back, glad we made it back safe. Whew!" Bringing the taxi driver into the story is beyond dumb if they are making it up out of whole cloth.

Your thread title is lacking. Could be the corrupt Brazilian legal system is nuttier than the Italian courts. Why would the judge who issued the warrant care? Did they insult the country?

Do they routinely harass people who report crimes? Why would they have made this story up?

According to my sports-radio friend in Rio it appears two other swimmers who said they were with Lochte & Feigen have just been pulled from their flights home. I can't find a link for that yet, tho...

Wrong two, they just showed their pics on MSNBC. Lochte is in the US already and the other three are "cooperating" with police. And yes, two of them were stopped at the airport, the third is still in Rio.

I can't believe they'd be looking for drugs. And isn't there plenty of sex at the Olympic Village?

Ever been to Latin America? Plenty of cops are corrupt. They stop and make people pay them money. Very common.

I don't know about the rest of them; but I remember Lochte telling the press his wallet was taken, and as he goes through that checkpoint he very obviously has nothing but a phone and his ID badge in his hands.

Prepare yourself for this being a big lie with no police corruption or armed robbery at a taxi.

I would imagine they know more about what happened than they are letting on.

Other countries don't have minute by minute police updates

Don't know about the rest of you, but if I was ever robbed at gun point in the Philippines, Thailand, Germany, Australia or any other country I was visiting, I'd be headed home immediately if i thought the police were more interested in questioning my story instead of finding the perps.

So the videos show they have items at airport security, big deal. Doesn't mean those were the items reported stolen.
