I find Jack McDevitt kind of meh. If you want an old-fashioned SF fix on a rainy weekend, he'll deliver, but none of his books are all that great.
Others have already mentioned Iain M. Banks, Aleister Reynolds, Charlie Stross, and Lois McMaster Bujold, so I'll mention them again.
CJ Cherryh's been mentioned too, though I'd suggest The Pride of Chanur to begin with.
