Because "criminals are stupid" is almost always the most likely explanation for any given instance of criminal stupidity.

How many people have ever put razor blades in halloween candy? How many people have ever spiked rub-on tattoos with LSD? How many people have ever laid clever traps for children with loaded guns in toy stores?

The nut quoted in the OP and again by me is proposing a conspiracy theory of why the gun was there. I remain convinced that whenever there are anomalies at a crime scene, the most reasonable explanation is "criminals are stupid".

Mark my words. The cops are going to talk to this lady, and they're going to talk to her boyfriend, and they're going to get to listen to some pants-on-head retarded lie about what happened to that gun and how it ended up in the toy aisle of Target. At no point will "fiendish plot to tempt kids to play with loaded guns" ever be a plausible explanation.

The blue star LSD thing was actually passed around as a flyer by concerned staff at my grade school. The razor blades in halloween candy thing was always an urban legend that spread by word of mouth, in my experience.

I can see how an out-of-work copy editor for the WWN might come up with the explanation quoted in the OP, but I don't think that's a strictly necessary ingredient for the gun nuttery displayed in that quote.

A conspiracy theory requires more than one involved party. The nut quoted in the OP proposed a possible motive of what is implied to be a single individual.

"Criminals are stupid" is a more plausible explanation than "bizarre idea that would be right at home in the WWN" is where I came up with my post.

You should be wondering where gun nut Kennedy McClain came up with their explanation.

I like yours, though. It at least makes a little sense.

Do recall the current packaging of OTS drug items was due to a deliberate poisoning of Tylenol way back when. The guy opened the jars, poisoned the pills, and placed the jars back on the shelves, and watched as people bought those jars!
Video cameras watched him watching them.

Yeah, like I've never misplaced a screwdriver or left a hammer, forgotten, in the trunk of my car.
 
So what is more likely then? Someone who wishes better gun ownership controls to potentially save lives goes out, gets a gun, loads it with live ammo and leaves it lying around in the toy section of a store, hoping that a child will pick it up, fire it and maim or kill other human beings. Or that someone who is not a responsible gun owner took their gun to the store with them, laid it down for a moment while dealing with shopping or a child, then forgot it. No need for a conspiracy theory here that I can see, or even a devious plan. Just human error.
