OK, this thing's freaking me out!

What happens is that if you follow the procedure you're given you always get a multiple of 9.

Why? Well, (10 * a + b) - (a + b) = 9 * a

So all they have to do is make all the multiples of 9 associated with the same symbol each time they do the trick. That is, they keep switching the symbols around, but each time it's presented, they make sure that 9, 18, 27... are associated with the same symbol as one another.

The reason it doesn't work properly is that they haven't noticed that 0 is a multiple of 9 and also needs the same symbol for the trick to work in all cases. Now I look, 90 and 99 have also been neglected. That's a bit rubbish, isn't it?

I saw this quite a while ago with better graphics (a magician guy was holding the crystal ball). It is simple math. Where x represents the tens place and y represents the ones place we get:

(10x + y) - (x + y) = 9x

So the result will always be a multiple of 9 (between 9 and 81). If you look at the chart of symbols closely, you will see that the same symbol is used for each multiple of 9 (9, 18, 27, etc.). This will always be the symbol that is revealed in the crystal ball. The other symbols are completely meaningless because you will always get a result that is a multiple of 9. And it doesn't matter if the symbol changes--as long as the same symbol used for all multiples of nine, your result will alway match that symbol.

If you got a wrong answer either you did your math wrong or they have a bug in the code for the page. :)

You should never get 0, 90, or 99. The instructions say a "two digit number". Lowest value is 10 -> 9, highest is 99 -> 81.

you skeptics are always trying to disprove ESP with science and math can't you just accept psychic powers this is proof what more do you need

OK, how about this. Next time you play it, I predict that the symbol you click on will also appear at position 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, and 81. Before you click on your number (which is one of those) check out the other multiples of 9.
