Good point. I guess I'd have to dig up those statistics, too. I can't think of an unbiased source, though.

If 0.61% was the infant mortality rate (seems close to the actual number for the US), you just misinterpreted what "infant mortality" means. This should be the proportion of babies born that do not survive to their first birthday. I don't think there can be any reliable statistics on the number of conceptions (only, possibly, the number of pregnancies, carried to term or not, and since those are detected after conception, there is bound to be some sampling/length bias).
