Occupy Wall Street better defend its identity

No, but there is a mention in the 1st Amendmant that "congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech".

And limiting speech via limits on expenditures certainly abridges freedom of speech. A difficult concept for a simple mind to understand, I know.

This has been going on for pages now and it's really rather obvious to me that thaiboxerken and others who are perhaps less dogged are really proposing a constitutional amendment. This is probably what almost everything the Occupy "movement" believes requires and it's not only in the US but also in Canada and other civilised nations.

That's hard work and it requires a sense of purpose far beyond hackey-sack and unicycles. It requires (as I told RandFan many many pages ago) an understanding that the people who need to be most convinced are those who are going to abandon the drum circles and meth pipes and get regular jobs as they mature. It is the people who mobbed the stores last weekend to get the $2 waffle irons who need to be enlisted.

I don't know how much clearer the agenda can be, but if I were an Occupy sympathiser, the last thing I'd be doing is arguing for limited free speech without understanding just how much work they're in for. They're competing with $2 waffle irons, for Pete's sakes.

....

The finance industry doesn't produce money or wealth. It extracts it from the rest of the economy, present and future.

....

Hi, Eustace Mullins. :D

Accountants and financial service professionals are every bit as important to the engine of economic health as whatever the hell it is you do for a living. :D

We add value at every step except the one where I see managers playing on their Blackberries during one of my extremely important seminars. :Dancing_growl:

I'm just wondering how far the US is from a Laumer Collapse.

Has the OWS reached Stage One yet, or have they reached Stage Three bypassing Stage Two...?

'Occupy LA Eviction live'

Know what? Screw this. Neither of us are budging, and here's why:

I said "think". I specifically said "think", qualifying it as an opinion. You cannot say, with intellectual honesty, that something is an opinion and a statement of fact at the same time.

Opinions, however, are, or are not, supported by facts.

And no, I won't elaborate on why I hold that opinion, other than vague claims, intellectual dishonesty, inability to address even its own problems, and the other stuff I normally go on about.

Is it fair to conclude from this, then, that you opinion is plucked out of thin air?

Why not debate the few things that are legitimate within the movement rather then grabbing onto the the lunacy spewed by the many.

Because as my father (Who was on the fringes of the planning for '68 Events in France), put it, the Occupy <Insert Blank> movement has lost control of it's message.

In my own opinion they have degenerated into 'rent-a-cause', protesting for the sake of protesting.

What is your opinion based on?

Personal observation, when I saw Occupy Perth, I initially mistook them for back-packers, it was only when I saw them writing an 'Occupy Perth' banner that I realized what they were.

Don't bother looking for them on Facebook. They voted to disband themselves. The people I saw were the ones who had lost the vote and vowed to continue the protest in defiance of the majority view.

They gave up when it was pointed out they needed a permit to camp.

Appeal to Authority.

The fact that after 3 months of protesting, we still don't have a unified list of grievances or demands listed on their webpage. At the same time we have seen spikes in crime, drug usage, rape. and we can't forget all of the memorable field trips that the occupy camps have taken.

I'd argue that means they are unfocused and just protesting to protest.

The UK has limits on campaign donations. Do you think you have better freedom of speech in the USA as a result?

JihadJane always wants facts about the political message sent by the Occupy movement and is apparently too lazy or scared to investigate on his or her own. This is from Victoria where there was a chance for Occupy to make an impact in the municipal elections. Here are the results:

http://mondaymag.com/articles/entry/the-week-nov-24

http://victoriavision.blogspot.com/2011/11/2011-victoria-election-results.html

The incumbent mayor won and he's one of the idiots who helped spend $8 million of taxpayers money to buy two buildings to help house somewhere between 20 and 40 people. Some of these people, lately, were somehow associated with Occupy but they might just have been homeless people. In Victoria it's hard to tell because some of the "homeless" are actually rich kids from the suburbs slumming downtown and peddling drugs and sex.

The so-called activists lost (including one punted from his councillor's seat). Filipovic, the mayoralty candidate who said he supported Occupy, lost by a long shot, and he doesn't like homeless people anyhow. He is sort of a coffee-house socialist.

I don't know why JihadJane can't just look up the political successes of Occupy (ie there are none) on his or her own but I would bet that there isn't an electoral district anywhere embracing these people or endorsing their message--indistinct as it is.

Statistically insignificant.

Your opinion doesn't seem to be related to your "facts". Perhaps you could explain the connections.

I never claimed my opinion was anything other than an opinion, unlike others who will tout theirs as an objective fact.

Is it fair to conclude from this, then, that you opinion is plucked out of thin air?
Since when have you been interested in "fair", Jane?

I have repeatedly explained why I oppose the movement, like I said in my previous post.

You have facts?

Please show me a political platform that has passed the "occupy" movement. I"ll wait for it. When can I see it? On what webpage? Maybe you can point out a particular leader of this "movement" that I can ask questions to and receive answers from... Who would that be?

If this "movement" has any directed list of grievances that I can forward to my local congressman, i can then find out where they stand on all of them. It might help me in my choices for the upcoming elections. Where can I find that list again?

Reasonable limits?

Limits that have nothing to do with the Citizens United case which the OWS crowd wants overturned. So even if you find the limits unreasonable, repealing Citizens United will accomplish nothing to change that.
