Yes it is an analogy but it isn't supposed to be taken seriously. I think the point of the satire is that Republicans are opposed to anything Obama does. I don't think it is specifically about health care.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: whenever you make up false quotes and attribute them to your opponent, it's a pretty good sign you're arguing against a straw man.

That's the level of scholarship of a lot of people, left and right wing. It's the difference between believing your straw men can attack, and knowing you're the one stuffing them with straw.

I would say the satire goes a little beyond that to the ideological difference in position between those who think the federal government has a legitimate role in many affairs and the gung-ho rugged individualists. I think that bit especially points toward the healthcare thing.

But yeah--it's The Onion. It's satire, not a straight opinion piece. Satire often casts things as absurd even if that position isn't defensible. Sometimes getting the laugh is more important than making any particular point.

It makes as much sense to engage in debate against a bumper sticker. (Something I have certainly done!)

after all, the Left is telling us that if the Right doesn't get on board with Climate Change legislation, the Earth is gonna both freeze over and flood in the next 5-10 years!
