Obama Skips Normandy Visit So He Won't Offend Germans, Brits

I'm offended Obama isn't visiting my country...oh wait....

If the newspaper article is correct and he was invited by Sarkozy to visit the beaches while in France, his failure to do so needs an explanation, even if the explanation is "I would like to, but will be visiting later".

An explanation to who? The tool-bags who don't know what side of WWII the Brits were on?!!?!?! You really haven't thought this one through.

Again, note the technique here. Same as we saw during election season:

Post a headline that is a pure lie against your opponents.

Note that every effort to debunk it KEEPS THE HEADLINE AT THE TOP OF THE FORUM.

For every person who posts in the thread, dozens will only see the thread title. Since thread titles are not edited once they are proven false, the lie will continue to echo its way around the internet.

Note that this is not only a message board tactic, but is useful for "headline only" news portals like Drudge. He knows people don't click through, they just browse headlines/titles. So put the lie in the headline, and who cares if the story at the other end completely debunks it? Most people will never see it.

How the Hell would visiting Normandy offend the Brits? It's not like they were not involved with Operation Overlord too....
Kallisop, you have become a Bizarro version of some those driven bonkers by Bush being in the White House.

Except that Bush was torturing people.

Obama so far has been... black. And a bit liberal.

Why do I think that you cannot exactly equate the two? Supporting a torturer is a mental disorder.

People who only read headlines probably have trouble finding their way out of bed in the morning. Their only impact on the World is to provide amusement for the rest of us. :(

You are correct except that most people over 12 (age and I.Q.) would see the headline as the bogus garbage that it is. How would the Brits be offended by Obama making a trip to Normandy? Weren't they and the French on the same side?!?!??

It was Charles de Gaulle who was not on the side of the Yanks and the Tommies.

...and, according to Patton, Monty.

Would a visit to North Africa by Obama be a slap in the face to the French since a little French blood was spilled there at the hands of the Yanks?

The headline in the newspaper is the misleading one. It reads "Barack Obama rejects Normandy trip to avoid offending Germany".

Rolfe.

and FDR, Churchill, and anyone in listening distance of de Gaulle's radio broadcasts that consisted of daily criticisms of the Allies.

Does killing Vichy French count since they were in bed with the Nazis?

I really, really have no horse is this race but

Quote:
"It wasn't going to happen," said an American official in Washington. "We went through the motions to placate President Sarkozy but giving special treatment to France was not on our agenda.

"During this trip, we wanted to maintain a balance between the British, German and France". A White House spokesman in London declined to comment. Last month, White House officials briefed that a Normandy visit had been considered but it had not been logistically possible.

Surely the issue has nothing to do with insulting the brave dead at Normandy but balancing the amount of time the President spent in each country.

I notice he also did not view a copy of the Magna Carta at Salisbury Cathedral and thereby insulted all who believe in the Rule of Law!

:boggled:

Here I was getting all huffy and preparing my own "dog pile on Obama" post, but somebody has to come along and post a reasonable explanation. :p

Y'all take all the fun outta being a hysterical reactionary. ;)

While President Obama, President Sarkozy, and representatives from Germany and Canada will be in attendance, looks like G.B.'s G.B will be skipping the event.

"The British Government has shamefully decided to ignore the event, with no plans for ministers or the Royal Family to attend."

The next day G.B. change his mind?

"Gordon Brown today responded to claims that the government was not honouring D-Day veterans by announcing that he would attend events to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Normandy landings this summer."

Soviet wreath laying ceremony

In related news,
United States of America, Washington, DC, will conduct its traditional ceremony of the laying of the wreaths to the Spirit of the Elbe memorial plaque at the Arlington National Cemetery in commemoration of the Link-Up of Soviet and troops and the American 69th Infantry Division at the Elbe River, April 25, 1945.

You are cordially invited to join them at this event in the company of your wives, relatives and friends. It is expected the occasion will bring together U. S. government officials; ambassadors and diplomats of former Soviet Union countries; veterans of the 69th Infantry Division and other WWII units; students and reporters.

My dad served in the 69th in the war.
