Jokingly referred to himself as a "mutt" when talking about the future first dog. Does this alter anyone's perception of him as a black president, does it change the way people think he sees himself? And does this invite any similar comments from the Rush Limbaugh's of the world?

Fine by me. My four grandparents were from three different countries. I consider myself a mutt.

He said "hypoallergenic" without stumbling, and he actually looked like he knew what that meant.

What a contrast with Bush.

I'm gonna love this president. :D

"Mutt" is also informal American English for a person of mixed nationalities. According to one dictionary, it is also UK for a stupid person or "berk". That I had to look up, since that was what John Cleese called Palin (Sarah).

It does not alter mine.

A "mutt"? Sorry, but I don't believe in "pure breeds". I even raise livestock... I know for a fact that if you go far enough back in my Boer goat's heritage you will find a dairy goat skeleton in the closet. The shock! The horror! :D I also know for a fact that my ancestors came from "different stock".

So what? It does not change what *I* am, today. Obama is who he is, and to me, that seems like a person with a good balance.

I just hope if someone aks President Obama a personal question that he doesn't resemble the remark

The most comical thing was the press reporter's reaction, sinking back into her seat with her heart clearly pounding as she blushed and giggled.

I think most americans are "mutts" like Obama... I'm an Irish Jew Atheist.

I thought he just showed he has an awesome sense of humor... The "seance" comment was great and hilarious (even if he did have to apologize to gipper's wife.)

You realize our president elect was the same man who mistakenly referred to America as having more than 50 states, and talked about giving child asthmatics "breathalyzers"?

I hope you don't presume that Obama is immune from saying wierd things................

Wanna bet that if there are multiple books on so called "Obamaisms" put out it won't be for comedy purposes like the books of "Bushisms"?

I thought he called BillO that? Or was this a different time?

yeah, but if the verbal slips I had made in the last 2 years were all recorded on youtube, the video would be a lot longer than Obama's.

As to the opening post, it is well known that Obama is mixed race, self-identifies with the black community, yet has in no way renounced his white half. So referring to himself as a mutt changes nothing. It points out that his race is no big deal.

Hell, I'm half English (although my paternal grandmother's maiden name was French), a quarter Ukranian, and a quarter midwestern American of uncertain ancestry. My wife's mother is Greek and her father is German. My kids are about as mixed as you can be and still be Caucasian.

I hear that. My mother in law is always going on about how she is Italian. She has never been to Italy, speaks no Italian and has never to my knowledge left the United States. When I argued she was American she told me I had to refer to her as Italian American.
I said OK.
On the condition that she refers to her granddaughter as Italian Polish Irish Scottish Welsh German Australian American from now on. Surprisingly we settled on the short version. :D
