What I have had thrown at me amounts to muslims are all fanatics and those who seem moderate are really just hiding their fanaticism in order to get us later. Really.

This whole flap is much ado about nothing. Be assured that regardless of what Obama says about anything the right-wing hacks at Fox News will jump on it. Maybe they'll eventually spin his words of general religious tolerance - well in keeping with the U.S. Constitution - into another charge that he's secretly Muslim, wasn't born in this country et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum.

In any case, does the federal government have any real say about where a mosque can or can't be built in the city of New York? I believe the city government would have final, indeed the only, say in the matter.

Point taken, but I think this wave of Anti Islam has a lot more in common..at least in the US..with the wave of Anti Catholicism in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
