Obama Official Portrait Controversy

Looking at the other two portraits of Clinton and Kennedy though, if these are in the same museum then I guess these pieces of junk fit right in. Like a Mad Magazine of presidential portraits? Not even worth commenting on now.

With Adolf H Dubya liking to paint people he met in the bath tub, I just had this idea about a tradition where a leaving president portraits the new one, and has to do a self-portrait if he is re-elected.

Remember that horrible statue of Lucille Ball?

Omg. I can't UNSEE that! Sometimes I hate what you people introduce me to.

The two paintings of the Obamas are artistic...like 'em or don't, I have to agree with the previous poster that said that if they are ok with the paintings, why should I care?

The question of whether people should have opinions about art is one of the great mysteries of the human condition.

I don't disagree at all with that. I do have an opinion about the portraits, but I'll keep that to myself as it's not particularly relevant. However, if I understand what you're saying (and correct me if I'm wrong), you are speaking of the human condition and not the art itself. To put it differently, it is not that art is good or bad that you are referring to, but the fact that humans actually care one way or another? Is that right?

I guess we could, in another thread, discuss the driving forces for humans to critique things on a purely artistic level and that could be an interesting conversation, whether it be any form of "art". However, I don't see the reason that anyone would be particularly compelled to over-reaction on these pieces, since I don't see any significance in the portraits themselves. They are to be put up in a place to remind people of the Obamas and may have some hidden parts to add significance, but, as far as art goes, don't seem to be making an overwhelming statement. Then again, I was always terrible at interpretation of the drawn or painted art forms, so what do I know?
