Obama: Lipstick on a Pig

So Obama supporters thinks Palin is a dog? A female dog perhaps?

"Obama supporters call Palin a Bitch!!"

See how easy this is to spin?
That wasn't even a good attempt at diversion.

So you admit you got the "story" from Rush?

That's about right.

And you are proud to admit it too. Absolutely mind blowing. How do you guys have the audacity to question our intelligence?

Or perhaps it was brilliant?

Again.. wow. Yes, so brilliant that it's been backfiring all over him for two days.

You guys want to either /handwave it away, or even go for the insane reach of it being some brilliant tactic. The fact is, in the very short timespan since Palin made her joke, this joke was going to be perceieved and interepted by some people exactly the way it was.

It doesn't matter if you think it's stupid, or that they are stupid. That is how the reaction is going. Any fool should have realized before saying something like that, so soon in the wake of her own joke, was going to cause exactly the kind of reaction it did cause. It was monumentally stupid, therefore, to have said it. It was not in the slightest way "brilliant". That is pure spin. After the fact spin to try to put a good face on an idiotic comment.

Denial and rationalization really are two of the strongest human drives.

I have noticed that the same people so outraged that Obama made that comment also tend to think that Ronald Reagan was brilliant, even in his second term.

So, since Palin used the term "lipstick" in a joke, she now owns the word outright? Maybe when they lose this election she should become a spokesmodel for Revlon.

Nah, she's a Mary Kay customer. I posted it somewhere else.

Actually, the GOP is the pig to which Palin was applied. They offer her up as proof that they give a rat's aboput improving the status of women, and don't bother to mention that they are only supportive of women who support the policies that have left a lot of women unable to feed the children they have chosen to carry to birth.

Where did I put that Lefty to English dictionary?

Obsolutely not [righteous indignation]! To admit anything, even if true, would be harmful to rabid, right-wing, conservative cause I have so gleefully jumped on for this election cycle. Next election I plan on joining the left and doing the same thing. Hold on Ben Burch! I'll be joining you in four years!

Republicans are only evil.

I have no time to read/scan beyond the first page of the thread, so all will forgive if I'm repeating the bleedin' obvious:

The "lipstick" in the remark is meant to symbolize Ms. Palin; the "pig" is the McCain campaign.

Surely, no one really could miss this, right?

If we assume that soundbites are discussed and vetted before they are used (I think that is a safe assumption) is it possible that there was a calculation to use the term pejoratively toward Palin given Palin's recent remarks knowing full well that there is ample plausible deniability?

Don't get me wrong here. I kinda doubt that but I think that to state that the meaning is clear and therefore it is impossible for there to be any entendre is truly naive.

John McCain on the subject of being a mayor or a governor for a short time THEN:

Let us compare the size and complexity of Giuliani's city to Palin's. Let us compare the size and complexity of Romney's state to Palin's. Let us marvel again that Palin could be President of the United States in just over four months.

Let us consider just what McCain will do and say to be the President.

Thanks to Vorticity's provided link in post number 113, I now see the context:
Sen. Obama said:
Let's just list this for a second. John McCain says he's about change, too, except -- and so I guess his whole angle is, "Watch out, George Bush. Except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy, and Karl Rove-style politics, we're really gonna shake things up in Washington." That's not change; that's just calling some -- the same thing -- something different. But you know, you can -- you know, you can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig.
Vorticity said:
He's actually referring to McCain's policies. This is absolutely crystal-clear in context.
Apparently Mr. Obama wasn't even referring to Ms. Palin. In that case I was mistaken in my statement that "lipstick" was meant to symbolize the governor, so it's even more wrong than I believed for the Repubs to cry foul.

I actually think the double entendre was intentional. Obama is claiming that McCain calling his policies change is just putting lipstick on the pig of Bush's policies, but at the same time Obama is implying that bringing in a young, attractive female VP candidate is just putting lipstick on the pig of the McCain campaign.

See post #252.

Well, good thing I was considering that the election is in November when I said that. We'll see how it all pans out, no?

No, it was a question...a possibility.
After the fact spin to try to put a good face on an idiotic comment.
Again, we'll see how idiotic it is. People wanted Obama to start fighting back...maybe this was a good way to begin.

Denial and rationalization really are two of the strongest human drives.
I like food and sex myself, but that's just me.

Yes, I got the Several meanings instantly on watching the dialogue.

Amusing moral of story?

Just as it is considered that African-American can use the N word but others cannot...

Now we see who can and cannot joke about lipstick.

Ha!
