Obama: Lipstick on a Pig

Regardless of whom the comment was actually directed it, coming so soon in the wake of Palin's own "lipstick" joke at the RNC is going to lead many people to make a connection. For right or for wrong, I confident it's going to be perceived that way to a great many people.

I predict this is going to be a negative on Obama that is going to cause a bit more backlash, and will be seen later as having been a major gaffe. This is just my prediction, we'll see what happens.

It was certainly perceived that way by the crowd.

If it feeds the belief that Obama is a sexist, it will be big trouble.

Regardless of how it will be percieved, do you believe the criticisms are just Brainster? Are you going to criticise the campaign for their stinking hypocrisy by using this phrase against Obama, while McCain gets off free by using it in relation to H.Clinton?

Completely different circumstances, because of Palin's lipstick joke at the convention.

That said, I go back to my original comment on this. I don't think Obama did this intentionally. It's just a rookie mistake. Rookies get rattled in the late innings of a close ballgame.

I don't think it was a mistake, but I don't think it was intended to be sexist either. Rather it comes across as sarcastic.

It has a nice symmetry. Palin describes herself as a pitbull with lipstick.

Obama uses a well known phrase ......

look past Vista’s translucent veneer to see that it’s nothing more than lipstick on a pig.

http://chris.pirillo.com/2006/07/18/windows-vista-lipstick-on-a-pig/
......that happens to also refer to lipstick. It's a nice way of referencing Palins self agrandising description while at the same time denigrating the republican ticket.

Rookie? I think not.

Turns out McCain also called Mitt Romney a pig.

A reporter then reminded Swift that in December, McCain was asked about criticisms coming his way from then-opponent Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., and McCain replied, "Never get into a wrestling match with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it."

Was McCain calling Romney a pig? a reporter asked Swift.

Of course not, Swift said.

It seems to me we should have one rule. If Obama was calling Palin a pig, then McCain was calling Hillary Clinton one. If McCain wasn't, then Obama wasn't.

In the case of Romney he actually seems to be referring to the person himself, not his policies. The denial, coming from the same person feigning outrage over Obama's statement, is laughable. IOW, when McCain does the exact same thing, it's OK, but it's an outrage if Obama does it.

Well.... not really. He's still using a metaphor for not getting into a fight with someone who will drag you down to their level and you will ultimately be the loser.

If it was a personal insult then a number of people on this forum will have infringed the MA over at the CT asylum. :D

You keep telling yourself that.

And you don't think this "metaphor" doubles as an insult?

I doubt it but no intellectually honest person with even a smidgen of knowledge of presidential politics considers for a moment that this proves anything about McCain's intelligence.

Actually, it does.

McCain doesn't ask for millions of dollars of contributions and assistance from powerful people only to speak out his ass.

He isn't getting his money's worth. Anybody that would consider Phil Gramm a good advisor on ecconomic matters when we are about to go into melt down from a failure to regulate certain ecconomic activities is not that bright.

Anybody who would dare to try to pass Palin off as any kind of a feminist is not bright.

There is also the possibility that McCain is being his own man. His judgement is not that good any more, if it ever was.

Weasel all you want to. Only a paranoid Republican would think that Obama was referring to anything other than the McCain aggenda and comparing it to Bush's aggenda.

McCain needs to get a life.

I'm sick of the mind games the GOP is playing. They are twisting reality and the language as though they think us all dumb hicks. Too bad none of them really know what they are saying.

But then, had they the intelligence they think they have, they wouldn't be Republicans and maybe they wouldn't take out SAMs with jet planes.

Your just pissed that the Dems can't keep up and are on the defensive.

Put another way, it's OK when you call a man a pig, but sexist when your audience thinks you called a woman a pig.

You can put pigstick on a lip...but the only "backlash" will be artificial.

Wait a minute. Obama makes a perfectly lucid remark, Gramps misunderstands, or pretends to misunderstand it, and the Dems are on the defensive? I don't see your logic here. Sounds like another attempt to twist reality around to relieve the sting of having your butt handed to you on a stick with a teriyaki glaze.

Almost twooferish logic.

That's one of the reasons I sometimes think Da Twoof is a Rovian plot to make McCain look sane by comparison.
