Why would the head of UAW need to step down? Have they failed, in some significant way, to be a union leader? Did they ask for a large chunk of bail out money in order to prevent their collapse as an organization, due to their own failures?

No, sadly, they are doing exactly what was done to Bush. And I don't condone it at all. In fact, it's really irritating me. I can't be a hyprocite about it. I hate the way Bush was demonized and villified over and over. I can't say "well they have it comin!" as a response now. It's still wrong.

I also find it odd that you want to believe that it was what was "claimed" to be done to Bush. It was absolutely done to Bush. It's unfortunate you can't meet halfway and admit that.

If these CEOs had any sense of honor they would have stepped down long ago. If the Boards of Directors had been exercising their fiduciary responsibility they would have been fired long ago.

I think there's a tremendous difference between deserved demonization, and demonization simply because that person is affiliated with a party that is not yours. Bush absolutely deserved a good deal of his demonization. A lot of us shut up after 9/11, but he really tossed our salads on the build up to the war with Iraq. On the contrary, I don't believe Obama has done anything near deserving the slanderous cut downs he's already getting.

When they came for the CEO of GM, I didn't object because I wasn't the CEO of GM....

Seriously I don't know what to think of this. Restaffing the CEO's chair at GM seems, yes, vaguely fascist. And no, Obama won't be calling for the head of the UAW at any time in the near future.

OTOH, you drink at the government's tap at the pleasure of the man in the White House. So overall I'd put this news at the mildly disturbing but let's see what happens next level.

Rick Wagoner oversaw a loss of $70 billion in two years.

The sad thing here is that the GM Board of Directors didn't make this decision on their own. Of course, Wagoner is Chairman of the Board, so I guess that explains that.

The only possible explanation for this phenomenon is that the CEO effectively controls the board, which is a very bad situation.

I can understand those who criticize the Bush/Obama decision to keep GM out of bankruptcy, but the guy oversaw a company and "led" it to a situation where it would cease to exist without government intervention. With that record, it seems rather hard to accept the notion that there isn't anyone better for the job.

ETA: I don't know how much the government should have thrown at GM, or what it should do now. I do know that the situation in December was very, very, bad, and I supported the government taking some sort of action to prevent economic collapse. People outside of Detroit don't grasp just how bad it was. There was a very real danger that GM and Chrysler would both not merely go bankrupt, but cease operations entirely. If that had happened, every single auto plant in the US, foreign owned and domestic owned, would have shut down, at least temporarily.

Let's be clear here, Fascism is only when government forces itself into a company.

When that company willingly comes to the government to ask for cash, then there is nothing remotely fascist about the government making stipulations on how that cash is to be received.
 
CEO's job is based on performance and the performance of the GM CEO was abysmal. He should be fired. I have no problem with Obam asking him to step down. GM was forced to beg the government for a bailout so the CEO brought it on himself. The union has some blame as well. The CEO, the union, the board of directors need to be looked at in their role at GM and the bailout needed to rescue the company.

Obama deserves to be demonized. He is rushing through trillions of spending without Congress as much as reading the bills. There will be f ups and we better pay closer attention to this a hole. DO NOT GIVE THIS GUY A PASS! Yes Bush deserved to be demonized as well.

Do you think there's any possible legit reasons why there is haste on pushing economic stimulus through? Or do you think this "a hole" is just trying to destroy the country? Do you believe Obama is a careless decision maker?

In part, yes!. Its so important that his bill be rished through. You can add Pelosi and Rid to the list on who is to blame. Pelosi promised for 48 hours for the public to read the last spending bill only for her to change her mind and not give the 48 hours. She had to go to Italy to get a legislative award.

Bush can be and should be blamed for his part. At what point do we recognize that Obama is now in power? His actions and proposals require a hell of alot more scrutiny than its getting. And we need to stop deflecting criticisms of Obama's plans with its Bush's fault.

I'm just curious, because I haven't seen it, but do you have any proof that they aren't reading the bills, and are just blindly putting their stamps of approval on them? If so, please name what bill you're referring to, and who is not reading the bill.

From who? He's getting plenty of criticism every step of the way.. what world are you living in? Will you only be satisfied when EVERYONE is disgusted with what he's been doing, so far? We hear plenty of criticism from Fox News, the republican party, and even msnbc.. what more do you want? Go to any MSNBC article that involves Obama and the economy.. then go to the bottom and click on "Discuss story" and see what kind of criticism he's getting. The blind criticism and hatred is not lacking..
