Only in office for a little over 24 hours some pretty serious cases have already shown up.
I knew it was going to happen, but not quite as fast.

Are you speaking to yourself or is there any specific thing you'd like to talk about? :p

Have you been monitoring Jerome da Gnome's posts at TOP?

Oh dear lord. It seems the politics section has come down with DDS,
Derangement Derangement Syndrome.

I fear the only cure is a glass of chill out.

:eye-poppi I went through that type of stuff in 2000 on the old iwon boards with the BDS folk. Honestly I'd rather read timecube.

Gene Ray is getting quite racist in his time of desperation. I haven't been to that site for years and just went back to it. Hilariously insane.

Examples?

Well the boards are now defunct so I can't get exact quotes but...

The Bush regime was responsible for the Tsunami due to either underwater nuke testing or global warming.

The stock market was tied to him directly and every day it went down, some Dems would post it with snide remarks (if it went up some Reps would post it.)

Daily death count on the troops with titles like "Shrub's murder count".

etc...

Is this that his supporters are deranged that he's unto God, or his detractors deranged that he's not really president because:

  • He was not born in the United States
  • He did not take the oath of office exactly as spelled out in the Constitution
  • He is secretely a Muslim and is thus actually taking the oath with a mental reservation or purpose of evasion
  • Ann Coulter said so and subconscious animal instincts are inducing me to beliefe her so as to ingratiate myself with her in my mind so I can mate with her

Well, the "When Will Obama Goes Nuts" thread in this JREF section contains some pretty good examples.

Are you denying that a over the top hatred of Obama already exists ?
Oh, it exists. The thing is, that's not necessarily ODS. Recall the definition of BDS - the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people, etc., etc.

Ergo, a twoofer wouldn't ordinarily be a victim of BDS because their heads are screwed up in so many other ways.

And simply hating the man's policies doesn't make one a victim of xDS. It's paranoia about the person - an unjustified fear - that marks it. Hating Bush because he backed the $400 billion Medicare prescription drug bill is not BDS. Hating Bush because he's the primary cause of global warming is. Again, that's in conjunction with otherwise normal brain function.

Hating Obama because you believe his policies will ruin America is not evidence of ODS. Hating Obama because he's secretly a Muslim who was born in Kenya or Indonesia or wherever, is. And again, that's in conjunction with otherwise normal brain function.

You have to have both - the paranoia and the otherwise normal brain functioning - to be a victim of xDS.

*snip nonsense*

You guys are treating a made-up term like it is a diagnosable mental disorder. When, in fact, 95% of the time it's used it's used to handwave legitimate criticism.

I don't call people who think Obama was born in Kenya or something sufferers from some made up syndrome. I think they're suffering from the oldest syndrome in the books - stupid. The right wing has had more than its fair share of sufferers in recent years, and it's been reacting by patting them on the back and giving them lots of accolades, especially if they're leggy blonds or have some obnoxious show.

And how is that an example of Obama Derangement Syndrome?

And dudalb, I'm not denying that some over-the-top hatred of Obama exists, I just wondered what precisely you had in mind. Mostly for my own entertainment, just like fstdt.com.

Oh, wait. I forgot one!

That is exactly the kind of stuff I mean as ODS. Pretty much the same as the wack stuff about Bush and Clinton.
And Greyice, what part of "we use Derangement Sydnrome not as real mental illness, but simply as a figure of speech for holding really bizarre and silly ideas about a polticial figure out of pure hate" don't you understand?
I love it when people don't understand the difference between the literal and figurative use of terms.

Nice backpedaling after post 12:rolleyes:. However, it doesn't really matter if you use it as a real medical diagnosis (which you give the strong impression of doing, whether you are aware of it or not) or merely as an insult, because it's detrimental to the debate.

I hate to sound like I'm on a high horse here, mostly because I've long been guilty of this myself, but I'm growing increasingly tired of labels such as 'ethnocentric', 'racist', 'fundie', 'Bush Derangement Syndrome', 'woo-woo', 'mentally ill', 'homophobic', 'anti-American', and so on ad infinitum. They indicate a lack of respect of your fellow debater and a superiority of some kind over him or her, generalize, and create hostility.

It has become the tradition in many circles to simply throw a label on the opposing party and use that label as a weapon whenever said party speaks, and I'm getting fed up with it. Don't like what your political opponent has to say on immigration? Just tell him how he's wrong. Skip the 'racist' tag. Skip the other insults. Just cut to the chase, act your age, and state your mind.

Bush Derangement Syndrome was coined by Charles Krauthammer who in my opinion misused his being a psychiatrist to label opponents of Bush as being clinically insane.

Now granted not all reasons for disliking Bush were/are rational, but labeling political views as insane is very dangerous.

Both uses boil down to the same thing - an excuse to trivialize and ignore people. If their arguments are so easily refuted, address them. If they're not so easily refuted, why are you labeling it "Derangement?"

Yes, there's people who get so emotional about causes that they lose track of reality. We've seen this in literally hundreds of movements this century, hippy communes, communist paradises, theocratic visions of wonder, the outcry against Elvis/Video Games/TV/Comic Books/et al, fluoridation of the water supply, communist witch hunts, I can go on and on and on.

Why would you possibly consider this particular use worthy of its own label? It's nothing new (demonization of Carter, idol worship of Reagan, etc.).
