NY Times editorial bombshell

As I discussed with Bob earlier, it could be argued that he failed to protect our nation from Russian attacks on our Democratic institutions, or respond forcefully to such attacks.

It could be argued that he should have done more, but he certainly did respond to these reports of Russian interference. Here is one summary:
https://www.npr.org/2018/07/15/6292...tion-respond-to-election-interference-by-russ

I am very sympathetic to Obama's attempts to tread very carefully, First the precise breadth of these attacks and their connections to Russia took some time to fully establish. They still are under investigation. Caution seems appropriate. But even more so I suspect that Obama was deeply concerned about having the Republicans treat any investigation of Russian interference as an unethical, purely political attack on them. Particularly given the close associations between the Trump campaign and the Russian interference. I don't have to imagine these accusations: look at how Trump and some of the Republican leadership has portrayed the investigations that have taken place both before and after the election as despicable, immoral, illegal, politically driven mudslinging etc. Investigation of Russian interference inevitably meant investigating the relationship of these Russian actions to the Trump campaign; a political minefield during an election year.

Can you picture Sessions doing anything even remotely cool, ever?

I can picture him going to a party dressed as a Keebler elf, and that would be cool.

He would then likely call the police and rat on partiers enjoying marijuana edibles, which would not be cool.

I'm rooting for it to be Nikki Haley, the only Trump appointee I like.

Haley is probably at least a little relieved today she is no longer governor of South Carolina and does not have to deal with what is coming their way over the next couple of days.

though I'm not quite sure why they felt the need to publish this Op-Ed.

Trying to wash some of the mud off the Republican party that they've picked up rolling around in the sty with Trump.

The language is pretty clear on that, with the part about supporting the goals of the administration. The GOP is realizing that Trump has tainted the party not only in the eyes of the opposition, but is costing them support among the more intelligent parts of their own base, particular after the immigrant children travesty. Some elements are realizing just how far down the rabbit hole that they've gone, and are trying to paint themselves as unsung heroes and align themselves with the anti-Trump resistance on the left, in order to try and prevent losing control of Congress in the upcoming election, as the backlash continues to grow.

As another poster said, the op-ed author is trying to have his cake and eat it too. He and his co-conspirators want to be able to keep sucking up to Trump so he'll support their agenda and not veto it in a fit of pique, while pretending that they're still the good guys so that they don't alienate any more of the moderate-right and conservative-leaning independents that they need to protect their Congressional majority in the upcoming mid-term elections.

She and Huntsman have both been suggested - neither likes Trump, State has been fairly hard on Russia despite Trump's affiliation with Putin, and both Huntsman and Haley have affiliated with Kissenger, who also used the word "Lodestar" often.
