Oh, stop it. Just because someone disagrees with you about the humour of these doesn't mean they are humourless. I can laugh at all sorts of racist jokes, but those signs were not funny in the slightest. They were too angsty and whiny.

No, you mean you didn't find them funny. Other people did. And I won't argue that you should have found them funny - de gustibus. I won't make you defend your reaction that you didn't find them funny. Funny is in the mind of the beholder. I won't even say you are humorless because you don't find them funny.

No, the humorless person is the one who, as Benchley observed, demands that one explain why something is funny. Humor is visceral, and if something doesn't make you laugh immediately, it will almost certainly not make you laugh upon reflection.

Now, up until that point in the thread, not a single person had asked you to explain why the signs are funny. Most who found them unfunny explained why and left it at that. Yet, you still labelled these supposed "lefties" as a "humourless lot."

You seem to be now backtracking a bit.

I think it's time to request the moderators change the thread title to "why my sense of humor is best" as that seems to be what people are more interested in.

Just out of curiousity, if someone puts "Bush is a Nazi" on a sign outside their restaurant is that funny?

If someone finds it unfunny, does that make them a "humourless righty?";)

Forgive me if you think I'm not getting it, but I'm truly have trouble grasping exactly what the points you are making are, simply because you seemed to have changed them mid thread.

Let me try and understand through an example. Suppose there is a restaurant whose owner posts anti-Bush slogans on a sign outside it. And I'm talking of the inflammatory variety, like "Bush is a Nazi" "All hail Furher Bush" etc. Y'know, like a restaurant Margaret Cho might own.

If someone told you he didn't find that funny, how would you react?

According to your recent post, you would only criticize him if you had to explain to him why you found it funny. Otherwise, you would not pass judgement on him. Since, of course, people have different senses of humour, and it certainly isn't hard to imagine a passionate Bush supporter being offended by anti-Bush slogans posted in a public place.

Yet, as I pointed out earlier, you jumped all over "humourless lefties" in post #29, who found the signs unfunny.

Let me ask you, is there any kind of content that could be posted on a public sign outside a restaurant that you might find so offensive that you would find if unfunny, no matter what the backstory to it is (i.e. the owner is wacky dude..)

To sum up: The xenophobic redneck rantings on the signs are not themselves funny. I assume everyone agrees?

The fact that this businessman puts such rants for all to see, while presumably still trying to run a business, can be viewed as funny, in the sense that it is refreshing and, not least, very unexpected.

Refreshing and unexpected are two components of humor. I assume these two components were enough for BPSCG to crumple up in fits.

I found it funny too, to be honest.
But, I found it interesting that when some people didn't, you started to claim it was "humourless lefties" who were the grups.
Do you have any real proof that lefties are less likely to find partisan "humour" funny that righties are. Perhaps you are basing your humourless lefty remark on personal experience. Well, in my experience it's been the exact opposite. I find the "righties" to usually be the ones with sticks up their butts. Of course, this a conclusion drawn purely on my unscientific observations and nothing more.
