North Texas Skeptics Program Updates

Please note: instead of starting new threads I'm just going to add new notices below. Please scroll down for the latest notice. Thanks.

The North Texas Skeptics is having it's monthy presentation meeting. This time around it's a panel on everyday myths.

Exploding Popular Myths

Time: 2 PM
Place: 2900 Live Oak Street in Dallas (Center for Nonprofit Management, corner of Live Oak and Liberty)
Free and open to the public

The North Texas Skeptics will host panel discussion on "Myths in Everyday Life." This is an audience participation event. You know for a fact you should not drink lots of water during vigorous sports. But is this really true? The skeptical panel knows. The audience will test its knowledge to answer the age-old question: "Is it a hit or a myth?"

PM me if any of you are interested in lunch beforehand

Taner Edis - The Ghost in the Universe
Edis, who teaches physics at Truman State Univeristy in Missouri, will be discussing his book The Ghost in the Universe, which won the Morris D. Forkosch award for the "best humanist book of 2002." In this book, Edis challenges metaphysical and religious explanations of the universe, arguing in favor of a more naturalistic view. We're very proud that Taner is coming to visit us, so let's give him a warm Texas welcome!

September 13th meeting and it sounds like a good one!

The Ghost Children of San Antonio

Did a train hit a school bus full of children in San Antonio over 50 years ago? Do the ghosts of these children haunt the site of the tragedy and routinely intervene to save others from their fate?
Danny and Ginny Barnett went to extraordinary effort to uncover the story. What happened when the skeptical pair journeyed to the Alamo City to observe the production of a TV program about the legend is becoming a legend, itself.

Danny Barnett will tell what happened.

Debate with a Kook

Skeptic John Blanton will debate creationist kook Jason Gastrich.
Gastrich has contacted the NTS and offered to debate us on the topic of creationism versus evolution. He was asked to pick one of the sides to argue for, and he chose creationism.

NTS Board member John Blanton will debate Gastrich by phone at the October meeting. It promises to be a lively undertaking.

Gastrich has previously debated athiests and others on creation, evolution, sin, prophecy and many other topics. He has attended various Bible schools and has obtained a Master of Arts in Bible and Theology. He is working on a Ph.D. in bibilical studies.

Jason Gastrich is currently running for Governor of California.

Um, just curious here, does Gastrich call himself that, or is that a title people call him for some joke?

Thanks.

I don't know, that is why I asked UnrepentantSinner.

A quick search of the internet might reveal that all but one reference to "kook Jason Gastrich" harken from NTS. The one that doesn't apparently is a JCSM commentary on the NTS ad. That last one, unfortunately, is no longer on line.
