North Korean train wreck

A tankerload of NGL (natural gas liquid) would make quite a big boom. If the tank cars rupture, allowing the liquid to gassify, when an ignition source is found, the explosion of the air/fuel mixture would be several times larger than the "Daisycutter" bomb.

I could see 3000 dead as a result, if this happened in a populated area.
Actually, an even more dangerous event occurs with LNG tankers.

When exposed to fire, an event known as a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) can occur. This occurs when a fire causes the LNG to increase in pressure while at the same time weakening the tank structure. Ultimately the tank explodes releasing a large amount of energy and sending shrapnel out for great distances.

Prediction: the death toll will be much less than 3000. I have a hard time believing that a train crash can kill that many people, even if the train is filled with petroleum. Remember the first few days after 9/11, we thought we had lost 20000+, but later it turned out we lost around 3000.

So, uh...when can I expect my million dollars?? :p :D

Don't start spending that million yet...

From BBCA Red Cross team sent to the scene has reported that 1,850 homes have been flattened and 6,350 seriously damaged. [/qoute]

It's not just a train crash so it still is possible the death toll can get into thousands.

I don't know how large and how busy train stations are in the US, but any occurence which destroyed a train station the size of Sydney's Central station during the middle of the day would have an extremely high casualty rate.

The initial estimates would probably be based on what is known about the average number of people on the station at that time of the day, and as the early reports didn't take into account the sheer number of homes which were flattened the casualty rate may turn out to be much higher than was first estimated as the survival rate in many disasters is often related to how quickly a rescue effort can be mounted.

I have it on good authority. Well made and well maintained Korean anti-imperalist trains did not explode. 3,000 fighters in the war against American imperalism self-detoneated out of love and admiration for the Great Leader and Son of the 21st Century Kim Il Jong. In short, this was a blow by the peace loving Korean people against American running-dog facists.

I know you were joking but humor, sadly, imitates life this time.
