"Obama and European Union leaders meeting in Prague condemned the move and said North Korea's dangerous defiance demanded an international response. Diplomats at the United Nations scheduled an emergency Security Council session for later Sunday to discuss what Obama called a clear violation of U.N. resolutions.

"North Korea broke the rules once more by testing a rocket that could be used for a long-range missile," Obama said. "This provocation underscores the need for action — not just this afternoon at the U.N. Security Council, but in our determination to prevent the spread of these weapons."

Abandon ship! Run for your lives!

Oh, it failed? Nevermind.

Realistically though, what response could be made?

Well, relying on North Korean know-how has worked out pretty well in the past.

Other than that, we could shoot down another missile over the Pacific. They hate it when we do that.

Obama:

"North Korea has a pathway to acceptance in the international community, but it will not find that acceptance unless it abandons its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and abides by its international obligations and commitments."

No surprise, everything they do get the same result. this is what happens when you starve your own people, morally, intellectually and physically, for so long.

I'm more worried about the North Koreans themselves than for us, it's more likely that a huge Tchernobyl will happen than an nuclear attack on anyone.

A strongly worded UN statement. They we can get back to the serious bussiness of makeing sure Thailand and Cambodia don't go to war.

What should the response be?

I think the response should be to set up loudspeakers throughout the DMZ pointing at N. Koreea, which play nothing but the most annoying songs by that most annoying group, the Ting-Tings.

They'd be begging for mercy after a few days.

It Failed to achieve ORBIT.
The missile launched, it just fell to Earth somewhere. Makes the motives suspect. Perhaps they didn't actually intend to orbit a satellite?

Since south korea is looking to launch a satillite and china and Japan already have it's not unexpected that North Korea would want to.

Everytime the North Korean government does something rediculous or issues an incredibly silly statement (which is often), I just imagine the Chinese collectively doing this:

That is the weakest attempt to excuse North Korea's action I have seen.

What?
geni says they were only trying to launch a satellite like their friends and neighbors, I call that a fairy tale, and you think I'm excusing North Korea?
Dude (or Dudette), you need to get your SkepticometerTM recalibrated...

Y'all just keep on b'eevin' that.
Maybe someday Fairy tales can come trueTM

It's quite posible to test a missile system and carry out a space launch at the same time. Sure you lose the ability to test the terminal guidence system but the results of the rocket so far suggest the odds of you getting to test that anyway are pretty slim.

So from the North Korean POV a space launch would be a nice bit of PR and would still produce useful test data.

I was referring to Geni's statment. Probably should have clarified that. I quoted you because I agreed with you.

Yeah, I think that's about it. That and keep up the work preparing anti-missile defense systems and hope like heck that they'll work when needed.
