No More Sermons at the Soup Kitchen

I suspect the French help-the-needy efforts are becoming moslem based.
I suspect that you have no good reason to suspect that, other than a dislike of secular organisations, Muslims and the French.

Or not; are Islamists big on charity?

Yes they are, charity being one of the five pillars of Suni Islam, or one of eth 10 principles underpinning the 5 pillars of Shia Islam. The type of charity though will depend on the particular flavour of Islam.

This is no good because it will discourage religious organizations from helping these people. If you eat their food you should have to listen to what they have to say. I'm an atheist and their words would go into one ear and out the other.

Yes because this is about advertisement not actually caring and helping others. That wouldn't be very christian now would it.

Where is your nearest Atheist Charity soup kitchen?

Other than JREF awarding "sckolarships" and "TAM freebies"?

I love it; a flock of (un)holier-than-you dicks congratulating one another on de-funding soup kitchens for Thanksgiving.

Y'all have a good one ya'hear?

I can't see where there has been any mentioning of "de-funding" any soup kitchens - can you point it out to me where this has happened?

As yet projected with likely no effect this year, and the groups effected are still working out the ramifications as a google will demonstrate, so no formal data is yet available.

For example: http://philanthropy.com/article/Obama-Clarifies-Rules-on/125424/

The best option to avoid new and onerous reporting requirements seems to be opt out of receiving Federal funds, and loss of funding is expected to result in programs including staff size being downsized.

As mentioned in the OP, President Obama revised 2001 faith based initiatives established by President George W. Bush with "Fundamental Principles and Policymaking Criteria for Partnerships with Faith-Based and Other Neighborhood Organizations" on November 17, 2010.

As with all political/social issues ymmv. My interpretation is certainly at odds with the majority here.

I've read the article you link to and that says the changes are in line with what "religious leaders" wanted. I also see nothing that indicates there are "new and onerous reporting requirements"? Where are you getting that from?

I see nothing in this that means any group has to stop providing their charitable activities - on what evidence do you base your view that this will mean that soup kitchens will be "de-funded"?

Actually, yes. Like many faiths charity is a cornerstone of Islam. However, just like among Christians (or any other faith), I'm guessing a certain percentage of Muslims feel that only the faithful (or the willing to be converted) deserve it.

Believing only theists are charitable is sadly a typical theist myth.

There are food banks in every major city in the US which are not related to any church. Homeless shelters including ones that serve meals are in every major city in the country, Some are secular some are not. In Seattle there is Fare Start, a restaurant that serves the homeless and trains them for jobs in restaurant business. It is not connected to a church and doesn't preach anything but how to get off the street.

Food on Foot is another secular program feeding the homeless. There are many of these organizations.

Now if you are specifically looking for atheist organizations starting up feeding programs, the American Humanist Association began encouraging local Humanist groups to start feeding programs back in 2007. I don't belong to any organization, and atheists 'churches' are much newer than theist churches. So organized atheist feeding programs are only just beginning. You have to recognize most of us are not interested in atheist churches. Atheist volunteers are going to be spread out in secular volunteer programs.

Poor guy, blind to the fact that atheism is just one facet of our being. You hyper-focus on that because your personal demons haunt you so. And you hate the fact that some people aren't as frightened as you.

BTW, you want an organization that feeds the poor but isn't based on religion? Try the USPS.
For those that don't get this reference, like AlB, the USPS has food bank collection drives a couple times a year. You leave donated food at the mailbox and they collect it.

More a question of quantity, I suppose.

Good. I'll take your word those are secular. I will suspect that many if not most of the voluteers staffing them are theists, since the number of theists is so much larger than atheists.

Jackson Limosine gave out 10,000 free turkeys in South LA a couple days ago, and god got the thanks!

Quit spoiling my fun. I had Al baffled. And it's amusing to note that he had never participated in this.
Actually I have. Not exactly a biggie for me, nor necessarily non-theist.

Which organizations do you think the USPS gives the food collected to? I could be wrong and they carefully select non-theist groups, if they can find one, but I doubt it. Most efforts anywhere I've been are theist backed and operated.

"Checkmate, atheists!"
Yup.

You didn't. You had no clue. As for the food banks, do some research yourself and see who get the food. THEN you can talk intelligently. About that, at least.

Have it your way: No changes will occur.

And I'll be wrong.

Was this to me? If so I don't understand it - all I have done is ask you for the evidence you have used to come to your conclusions, I've not expressed an opinion about the changes.

Bottom line, one billion pounds of food given to a non-religious entity every year.
Sorting out theists from non-theists still a bit of a problem; theists are by far the larger group. That applies within the USPS hierarchy that decide the endeavor is justified, as well as the original givers, and on to recipient groups.

I understand your desire to claim that since the USPS is not a defacto religious organization its staff and decisions must be 'atheist'. Good try, anyway.

Sorry back at you. The USPS is not a religious organization. Struggle with that if you wish, reality will ignore your flailing. And I will just be amused.
