All else aside, I've never understood the logic of the "I am a political prisoner" claim. Suppose it's true. The police/prosecutors framed Mumia for the crime in order to silence him for his political affiliations and work. What, then, about the dead cop? We'd have to believe that either 1) the police/prosecutors conspired to kill Faulkner themselves, or 2) that they deliberately ignored the true killer in order to maintain their case against Mumia.
The 'political prisoner' nonsense works because the vast majority of Free Mumia T-shirt wearers never even get to hear that there is a murdered cop in the picture. They hear "Free Mumia, he's a political prisoner!" and that's all they care to know. If someone does hear a bit about the trial they get a heavily filtered tale of the trial that mentions Faulkner as little as possible. If someone delves beyond that they start getting myths and more myths and often already have vested interest in still justifying the Free Mumia attitude (Rage Against the Machine fans were particularly fond of the Kool-Aid) and are happy to take them as gospel.
