I know it's been mentioned in a few threads, but for those that don't go into those threads, and aren't aware. I want to introduce Ninite, or simply ninite.com

It's a great website as all of the programs that are available for download have been tested, and are reliable. The website will automagically select "no" for any superfluous program installs, if you hold on to the installer file and click it at a later date it'll update the programs, and you can download\install several programs at once. That last of which makes it extremely useful for people like me that prep 5-10 machines a month.

It's a neat idea and the software list is pretty extensive. It has a lot of really good FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) tools.

Now, as a long time Linux user, the mere fact this site exists is a symptom of just how poor the Windows infrastructure is. Linux has had this for as long as I've been using it, in the form of deb/dpkg on Debian systems and their descendants and rpm/yum/dnf on Red Hat systems and their descendants. It's all built in to the base distribution, with no need to buy a "Pro" subscription to get an extended set of software And it handles all the apps in the distribution's repository, not the 90 in the free version or the 130 in the Pro version.

I've been meaning to step up my linux game, but I work in almost exclusively windows environments. It just hasn't become a need yet.

Good news! With the latest release of Windows 10, WSL 2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) comes complete with a bootable Linux kernel. So you can pick up a lot of Linux knowledge without leaving Windows. :)

Linux has a powerful set of command line tools that can make routine tasks, even stuff that you wouldn't think of being useful for Windows, a lot easier. Here's a list of 39 essential commands, and at the bottom of that page is a link to a hundred commands. (And they didn't cover wget or curl, which are wonderful for downloading large files from the web because they can auto-resume after a break in the connection. Or advanced ones like sed and awk that can perform transformations on text files, from the simple to complex.)
