Should have titled the thread "Beheading Victim"
so we knew who you were talking about, because I'm sure there will be several threads which then diffuse the discussion.

Anyway, other than the, to us, unbelievable brutality of the act (there are beheadings all the time in our friend Saudi Arabia) here's an interesting take on the family's reaction:

............
"I knew he was decapitated before," said the father, Michael Berg. "That manner is preferable to a long and torturous death. But I didn't want it to become public."

Michael Berg lashed out at the U.S. military and Bush administration, saying his son might still be alive had he not been detained by U.S. officials in Iraq without being charged and without access to a lawyer.

Nick Berg, a small telecommunications business owner, spoke to his parents on March 24 and told them he would return home on March 30. But Berg was detained by Iraqi police at a checkpoint in Mosul on March 24. He was turned over to U.S. officials and detained for 13 days.

His father, Michael, said his son wasn't allowed to make phone calls or contact a lawyer.

FBI agents visited Berg's parents in West Chester on March 31 and told the family they were trying to confirm their son's identity. On April 5, the Bergs filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending that their son was being held illegally by the U.S. military. The next day Berg was released. He told his parents he hadn't been mistreated.

Michael Berg said he blamed the U.S. government for creating circumstances that led to his son's death. He said if his son hadn't been detained for so long, he might have been able to leave the country before the violence worsened.

"I think a lot of people are fed up with the lack of civil rights this thing has caused," he said. "I don't think this administration is committed to democracy."

Oh I see: US soldiers’ abuse prisoners, get punished -- USA is evil torturing regime.

Terrorist who align themselves with Al-Queda behead an innocent man on tape -- USA is evil torturing regime.

It makes perfect sense. I also like the other side of this equation.

US soldiers abuse prisoners, get punished -- The support for US weakens; people protest how USA is really a bad country who is no better than the terrorist; subgeniues posts news stories from people who blame USA.

Terrorist who align themselves with Al-Queda behead an innocent man on tape -- The support for US weakens; people protest how USA is really a bad country who makes people behead others; subgeniues posts news stories from people who blame USA.

they happened to be his parents who have more knowledge than you about the situation, and regardless, a right to express their grief....
slandering me doesn't change the facts......

I'm sure you can e-mail the parents and express your informed opinion on the subject....and be sure to mention what an ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ I am.

Here Gramma ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊:
""He was a Bush supporter," Berg said. "He looked at it as bringing democracy to a country that didn't have it."

Suzanne Berg said she was told her son's body would be transported to Kuwait and then to Dover, Del. She said the family had been trying for weeks to learn where their son was but that federal officials had not been helpful.

"I went through this with them for weeks," she said. "I basically ended up doing most of the investigating myself."

Live in your weird world of attacking facts that don't support your conclusions. And go comfort these parents of a kid that was trying to do something good.
You can do that because you have had a child beheaded and you can relate to that and offer them your deep insights....

One of the less attractive aspects of our free press is the rather sickening habbit of getting statement from grieving survivors.

No, I will not dehumanize him in that way. You should be ashamed for asking.

No I was only suggesting a thread title that would consolidate all discussion.

They should have dropped a bomb on him from 30,000 feet and killed a few dozen other innocent people with him...that`s the way some people do it. It`s so less barbaric that way.

You were suggesting that hearing the name of the man who was executed might be confusing to you, and that we should refer to him as an object instead.

I understand that you didn't mean the comment to be offensive, but it was.

His name was Nick Berg.

What was Berg detained for? Why wasn't he allowed a lawyer or outside contact while he was detained for two weeks? What would have happend to him if he wasn't a US citizen helping rebuid with a family that sued the US gov to get his release?

I was trying to find out more about the circumstances of his detainment but could only come up with this:
One government official said Berg had earlier been arrested by Iraqi police in a sweep and detained by coalition authorities. Those authorities contacted the FBI, which interviewed Berg, the source said.

Berg was released when authorities realized he was in Iraq legally, the source said. He was in the process of leaving Iraq when he was taken captive by insurgents.

The FBI confirmed that agents also interviewed Berg's parents about why he was in Iraq.
Nicholas Berg was due to leave Iraq on March 30, his family said.

"The agency had been asked to interview the parents regarding Mr. Berg's purpose in Iraq," FBI spokeswoman Jerri Williams said without elaborating.

In early April, Berg's parents filed suit against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, saying their son was being held by the U.S. military without merit. However, just days after it was filed, the suit was declared moot.

Sir if you do not have anything of value to add to this discussion you can ignore it and move on as nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to respond to me with insults.

"subgeniues (sic) posts news stories from people who blame USA."

They were his parents. They know more of what's going on than you or I. So what if I post stories from people who blame the USA? They were the parents of the guy that was beheaded. Its their opinion, not mine. Get it? No, I don't think so.
You want to change the subject when there's evidence to contradict your conclusion. Right?
Otherwise you would respond to what they are saying rather than attack me.

What relevance is their opinion on Rumsfield to the terrorist who beheaded him? Unless you are suggesting FBI was involved you are simply trying to either change the conversation or justify the auction of those terrorist.

Well believe it or not your two options are not the only ones there are.
Ignore buttons on the count of three...one, two.....

...Getting back to the subject.

I don't think these photos and video should be shown. It's a horrible murder being committed who honestly wants to see this? Reading about is sickening enough.

How about this.

Son was naive and believed Dubya. He went to what is currently a very dangerous part of the war.

US, from which we hope to expecte more of than Osama, treated him with contempt. Compare his treatment with that of the truckdriver who was also kidnapped. That guy was feted and in the news. But he was not working for himself, but for an official contractor.

His parents came up against a scary new face of the US. The US is not like Saddam, is it. It doesn't hold people in secret without letting concerned parents know what is happening. Well, yes, it does. It doesn't execute them yet, in secret. Well, it does if they are Iraqi.

The US is currently experiencing a major schism. Between those who believe that what is good about the US requires that they act in an ethical manner, and those who don't, who appear to believe that what is good about the US requires them to do whatever it takes, without realising that when they do this, they destroy what they thought the US stood for.

I think you can guarentee the whistle blowers in the US army won't be thanked. Many will be blaming them for all that goes wrong from now on.
