Was Aaron Hernandez convicted because his fiance threw out the trash? No murder weapon has been found, no witnesses have been found, and, most shockingly of all, no motive has been found. The case was entirely circumstantial. Another case of an innocent young person being framed by a corrupt DA and an incompetent police force? Was this the American version of the Amanda Knox case? Think about it - there are a lot of Italian-Americans in Boston.

cell phone

Didn't his cell phone show activity in the area near the TOD? I have not followed the case closely.

The evidence may have been largely circumstantial but the reality is, Hernandez' own lawyer admitted his client was present during the murder. But he maintained Hernandez was not the shooter -- just a witness -- and was too scared to try and stop the killing.

During closing arguments, Hernandez lawyer James Sultan for the first time acknowledged what evidence pointed to: Hernandez was there when Lloyd was killed. But he described Hernandez as a witness, a 23-year-old kid who didn't know what to do after seeing a shocking crime. Sultan pinned it on Hernandez's two co-defendants, Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, both of whom have pleaded not guilty and will be tried later. Link

I take it you really haven't been following the case.

He's been conclusively placed at the scene and his lawyers admit this. His actions up to that point lead to the conviction.

Yup. The most interesting part was that the prosecution wasn't allowed to introduce Hernandez's motive for the crime. Lloyd knew about the 2012 double homicide that Hernandez is going on trial for shortly and Hernandez killed him because he thought he was going to reveal it. Since Hernandez has not been convicted of it yet, it couldn't be used in trial.

By far the most damaging testimony in the trial:

http://www.whdh.com/story/28648212/aaron-hernandezs-fiancee-i-removed-box-at-his-request

"He told me to go downstairs in our storage room and remove a box from our home," Jenkins said. "I believe he said it was important."

Downstairs, she found a cardboard box of 35 to 40 pounds, open on top, that had smaller boxes and cardboard inside, obscuring what was underneath, she said. Jenkins said she didn't look inside the box or ask Hernandez what was inside. Instead, she said, she put it inside a trash bag and covered it with baby clothing, then borrowed her sister's car and drove around.

She said she threw it in a trash bin but could not remember where.

"I don't know. I found a random dumpster," she said.

No one could believe this woman would not look in the box.

According to various sports outlets, the prosecution has a much stronger case against Hernandez in the July 2012 double murder for which he has also been charged. CNN has reported:
"There is ... probable cause to believe that Aaron Hernandez was operating the suspect vehicle used in the shooting homicides ... and may have been the shooter," reads a June 2013 warrant that was part of the unsealed batch of records. The warrant was used to search a Toyota 4Runner linked to Hernandez that, according to court documents, witnesses saw at the scene of the crime. The warrant gave permission to search for gun residue on the SUV, which was recovered at the home of Hernandez's uncle in Bristol, Connecticut.

In search warrant affidavits, investigators have said Hernandez and another man, later identified as Alexander Bradley, followed de Abreu and Furtado into the club. The former star football player and Bradley are seen on security cameras together inside Cure Lounge and driving an SUV that had been following de Abreu and Furtado when they left the club, according to court papers. Witnesses said that the SUV sped away after multiple shots were fired at the car. CNN link

This case stems from one of the victims -- I think it was de Abreu -- accidentally bumping into Hernandez in a Boston nightclub. Hernandez reportedly became enraged over the incident and told friends de Abreu had done it deliberately, the latest in a series of incidents in which Hernandez believed other men were trying to provoke him. Later that night, Hernandez and Alexander Bradley waited in their SUV near the club. When Abreu and the other man, Furtado, drove by Hernandez followed them. He pulled up alongside their car at a red light and, according to police, began firing a handgun into the car. Abreu was killed and Furtado fatally injured.

I think the prosecution did a good job showing what they could claim as a motive. They showcased his arrogance and stated simply, "He did it because he thought no one would suspect him".

It will be interesting how the next case against him will play out combined with the inevitable appeal.

Let's also not forget there are two others coming to trial in this murder. ;)

And isn't there at least one other (maybe 2) shooting incident he's connected to?

Bringing the total to 3, perhaps 4?

He's a piece of work, isn't he?

Two. The 2012 double homicide that he's going to court for next and the Florida indecent. In Florida, he shot a guy in the face but the person he shot chose to not support criminal charges but chose to sue him (over a simple argument) .

The prosecution was able to put Aaron Hernandez in contact with murder victim Odin Lloyd at around the time Lloyd was shot, able to put Hernandez himself at the murder scene through DNA evidence.
The case hinged on other elements: cellphone records showing Hernandez and two friends communicating with Lloyd around the time of the slaying; Lloyd's phone pinging cell towers between Boston and North Attleborough; surveillance video at Hernandez's home showing him holding a black item that appeared to be a gun minutes after workers at the industrial park heard gunshots; a joint found near Lloyd's body with Hernandez's and Lloyd's DNA on it. Hernandez' lawyer conceded his client was at the scene.

The big question is, why? Hernandez was on a path to being an NFL great. He had already established himself as an outstanding player and had been rewarded by his team, the New England Patriots, with a contract paying Hernandez a huge amount of money. Yet he threw it all away because a dancer in a nightclub bumped into him and then didn't apologize.

Was Hernandez using steroids? Was this behavior an example of 'roid rage? Is it the result of an undiagnosed head injury he suffered playing football? Is he sociopathic? I guess we'll never really know.

I believe he got the mindset that he was above the law. He believed he could out OJ, OJ. ;)

He's an arrogant short temper kid with a boatload of money. At least he was.

I can't imagine the money lasting much longer. I feel for his daughter.

I missed this the first time. WTF!?

Far be it from me to defend yet another AK brush fire -- far, far be it -- but to be fair, the OP states the following...

Was this the American version of the Amanda Knox case?

...which does kind of invite comparison between the two cases. OTOH, I well know just how slippery that particular slope gets, and quickly.

[As mod]If a comparison between the two cases is made, then as long as the focus is on Aaron Hernandez's brush(es) with the law, the posts would probably stay.[/as mod]

Personally, I can see very few points of similarity between the two cases, so drawing a comparison may be a little difficult.

Nope, the Knox case was controversial from day one; here there is little debate: the evidence presented shows that Hernandez was guilty as hell.
