News from The DNC - John Kerry Has My Alderman Kicked Out Of Denver Hotel!

Just ran across this bizarre news from the Democratic National Convention:

DENVER---Chicago Ald. Richard Mell (33d) is vowing never to use Heinz ketchup again after an incident in which he and a group of Chicagoans were asked to leave a prominent Denver hotel after helping a first-time delegate get her picture taken with Sen. John Kerry.

He blames Kerry for having the group kicked out and said it was an example of why the Massachusetts senator failed in his presidential bid.
"I never heard of anything like that, actually asking us to leave," Mell said. Then, citing Kerry's wife, Teresa, the heir to the Heinz condiment fortune, Mell said, "Heinz ketchup will never be brought into my house again."

Kerry denies he asked for Mell to be booted from the hotel, and offered to have a drink with him. No word on if Mell is buying that story.

Dick Mell is the 33rd Ward Alderman here in Chicago, and I live in the 33rd Ward. He is also the father-in-law of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojovich (who also lives in the 33rd Ward), aka "Public Official A" from FBI court documents.

Knowing Chicago Aldermen, I wouldn't be surprised if grocery stores selling Heinz products suddenly start getting visits from building and health inspectors lol.

It's only legally permissible for Dems to get their pic taken with union members, at small-town lunch counters, and with "community activists". Not with the super-rich fat cats that really drive their agenda and fund their campaigns.

I have been watching The Untouchables (THe orignal TV show) on DVD and I notice that Chicago Alderman in that series are invariably portrayed as corrupt and on The Mob's payroll. Thinks have not changed much, apparently.

Update: A Kerry spokeswoman e-mailed to say that neither the senator nor his staff asked to have anyone removed from the hotel.

"We only became aware that anyone had been asked to leave when we saw your report," Kerry spokeswoman Whitney Smith wrote in the e-mail. "Sen. Kerry just spoke to the alderman to apologize and offered to have a drink with him and his group in Denver."

Sounds like the hotel just wanted to maintain its reputation. Some hotels here in NYC work hard to get a rep as a place where you can stay without being bothered (especially the expensive ones). Movie Stars/Politicians/etc. stay there when they don't want people running up and asking for autographs and stuff.

John Kerry was probably perfectly pleased about this, the hotel was probably... less pleased. Even if Kerry is okay with it, there's a possibility other guests could see it, and they would feel less secure about the entire thing if the hotel just let it happen.

Not all public figures absolutely love people running up to them when they just want to eat breakfast/go to sleep/live their lives.
