New Zealand Under Tsunami Threat

We live in jumpy times. If the NZ govt. hit all the buzzers after an 8.1, I can understand. If people are complaining now, after the ball game is safely over, that's also understandable.

We don't have tsunamis reduced to a science. Not even down there in The Land of the Colliding Plates.

Question: How hot is it really? Yes, I can handle a reading in Celsius.

The big difference between Fukushima and the Kermadec earthquakes - aside from the huge disparity in severity, is the distance. Fukushima's was 100 km offshore, Kermadec was 1000 km offshore.

By the time the alert was issued in NZ, Civil Defence and the government agencies were aware that the tsunami had a height of 1-3 metres at the nearby Kermadec islands, and predicted that it would be between 0.3 and 1 metre by the time it got to NZ. As it happened, it was about 0.1m.

At 1 metre, it would have caused damage in a couple of estuaries. NZ isn't Holland; it's a land of hills, and very, very few places have houses within reach of a 1-metre tsunami.

On the east coast, yesterday's temperatures ranged from 25-28 C.

To be having this sort of movement on that fault is a little concerning, though hopefully, these have released stress on the fault and not added to it, especially down here to the south.

I think everyone living in the middle 1/3 of the country is mindful of the fact that we are due for "The Big One" on the alpine fault.
