There is a great article in the current New Yorker (Oct. 16, 2006): "Paranoid Style: How conspiracy theories become news" by Nicholas Lemann. Here's a great quote on the inability to convince true believers:

To engage in huffy denunciations of the journalistic shortcomings of "Loose Change" would probably not change the minds of many of its fans. September 11th ... is very high on the list of all-time great subjects for conspiratorial speculation ... .​

This does not seem to be available at the NewYorker website, so you'll have to go to the library or buy the magazine ("the media issue"). Happy reading!
