Sarah Jeong Joins The Times’s Editorial Board as lead writer on technology.

Unfortunately she is a racist. (maybe)

But that's OK, she was just trolling the real(TM) racists and the NYTimes is good with that.

Hard to find non-opinion coverage of this in the U.S. BBC has a decent breakdown:

Sarah Jeong: NY Times stands by racist tweets reporter

In a statement on Thursday, the newspaper's corporate communications team said Ms Jeong's "journalism and the fact that she is a young Asian woman have made her the subject of frequent online harassment.

"For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harassers.

"She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we too often see on social media.

"She regrets it, and the Times does not condone it," the statement said, adding that "she understands that this type of rhetoric is not acceptable at the Times".

Ms Jeong tweeted a separate statement, saying she had "engaged in what I thought of at the time as counter-trolling" and that she had "mimicked the language of my harassers".

In other words;

It's okay when real racists do it because ... free speech.

It's not okay to mock racists by doing it right back at them because ... reasons.

She's an editor, not a reporter.

I think she is doing both.

To answer questions like these, the editorial board will soon be turning to Sarah Jeong, who will join us in September as our lead writer on technology. Sarah will also collaborate with Susan Fowler Rigetti, our incoming tech op-ed editor, and Kara Swisher, our latest contributor on tech issues.

At least it reads that way to me.

The right are reaching new heights of hypocrisy with it's "Whataboutism" on this issue.

If real racists do it these days, they get called out, fired from their jobs. So, no, I wouldn't say it's ok when real racists do it. Freedom of speech, not from consequences.

It's not ok to post racist stuff, even jokingly. I thought this was well established by now.

If this was a white dude in the exact same scenario "joking" about black people, the NYT would fire his ass on the spot.

It's not racist if it's anti-white. It's not sexist if it's anti-male. And it's not discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation if it's anti-straight.

Not racist. Slants don’t have agency and therefore cannot be held responsible for forming negative stereotypes. Only White people are intelligent and advanced enough to be held liable for forming evil thoughts and making stupid statements.

I'm certainly willing to believe there are people neither intelligent nor advanced enough to make a rational, intelligent argument, based on what I read here.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Are you new to the game? It's "slopes".

Yeah, this is a battleground that will really cause people to see things your way. Reporter reacts to racism by posting racist tweets back at the racists. What an outrage.

Difficult to see how anyone who can't spell "Twitter" gets a job as an editor.
