New train speed record

Strangely enough, in the UK, its cheaper to fly to Barcelona than catch a train to Birmingham.

That said, I'd ALWAYS take the Eurostar to go to Brussels or Paris. 2h25m from Waterloo straight into the city center. Cant be beat.

Agree 100%. The new "Great Belt Bridge" in Denmark together with a high speed train line (well RELATIVE high speed) has virtually viped out domestic passenger flights.

IMHO domestic flights in Denmark made about as much sense as domestic flights in my house (they're about the same size).


I'd like to futher qualify my answer and change "trans oceanic" to "trans anything" including

- war zones (flying over is better than training through)
- mountain ranges (digging holes is costly and they're dangerous)
- continent - unless you build a lot of point to point tunnels and tracks you will always have to divert via major cities to get anywhere

True but then again, some of the largest over here have allready been holed.

Hmmm, you're right but OTOH it works that way in many European countries today, it is a question of planning.

My point is that sooner or later we will HAVE to use trains/ships because fossil fuel runs dry. It would be really really smart if we WAS prepared when that time comes.
