Merged New telepathy test: which number did I write ?

I would like to know if I was credible though. To be fair I made extensive preparations to receive the message. I used my dowsing rod, adorned with healing crystals. I also, just to be sure, wore my patented bigfoot suit. To crown my preparations, I sellotaped a picture of visionfromfeeling to my forehead and sprinkled homeopathic remedies around the environment. I then used my pendulum to guide my dowsing rod along the ley lines. I couldn't be any more sure of my response.

He's going to take your post seriously, you know. :D

It was quite a relief to see this post. You were starting to worry me.

:)

This.

As I said earlier, his ability to understand sarcasm is zero, and he appears to be completely innocent of humour, hence his inability to judge people, or even word sequences makes his claim all the more vapid.

Thank you very much, scarlett, I shall not ask you to change your answer again.

Since you seem to have included my answer as one of your three genuine responses to your current test, and do not seem to understand what a sarcastic or facetious response is, I need to explain it right now.

I lied to you! And you could not even tell that I was lying! That is about how good you are about understanding words in a row.

My actual answer, was "42", not a number between 1 - 4, and was meant to be a joke which you probably do not even understand, as it is the answer to the question of "the life, the universe and everything".

It is the question that was not really asked properly and even Deep Thought did not understand the question and neither do you.

So please delete me from your list of "genuine" responses. Delete the other non genuine responses and you have nothing!

Nobody cares!

My intention was to demonstrate to Michel that the written word is an easy medium in which to communicate falsehoods and hide one's motives and it therefore cannot be relied upon.

Michel, you cannot rely on these answers. The appearance of sincerity is just that.

It is my belief that Michel may have an arts degree and therefore doesn't understand the scientific method.

He is perfectly entitled to look at written responses/comments in a qualitative way if he is interested.

Michel, you would really need to assign the job of giving a number value for perceived sincerity to a colleague to do. Then they can be used for an investigation into people's attitudes on an Internet board towards telepathy, nothing more useful I'm afraid. You cannot mix qualitative and quantitative data like this and expect to be taken seriously as a researcher.

Having said that, Michel, please listen when I say that no one on this forum is listening in to your thoughts.

Ladewig and Giordano, please stop telling me to see a doctor, I am afraid this might derail this thread. Btw, I am a doctor myself (a Ph.D.), no, it's not a joke.

Try to look at this objectively. You think other people can hear your thoughts. Everyone you've talked to about this denies they can hear your thoughts. What is the most likely explanation - that your perception is incorrect, that everyone else's perception is incorrect, or that everyone else is lying?

I would think that if I could hear Michel's thoughts, I would also be hearing the thoughts of another thousand, million, or billion people who may be dealing with low cardinal numbers at any given time. Michel's number would be lost in the cacophony unless he is virtually the only telepath. Should I dial my telepathic tuner through all these signals and somehow just know which one is from the person who identifies as 'Michel' on a forum?

OK, here is my genuine answer ## I really believe, I really and truly believe.

Really? So, your numerical answer was a "42". Can you prove it? (remember, this is a very rigorous test. But it can only produce good results if people answer well). What is the character string you used to produce the MD5 hash in your answer above?

Oh, well if you want evidence that should only take a few minutes.

My test protocol:

I will spend the next five minutes thinking about my phone number, thinking about a password and thinking about the £1,000 cash prize I will give to the first telepathic person anywhere on the planet who simply rings the number and says the password.

Lines are open now, clock is ticking.

Well, to be fair, Michel is not claiming he can read anyone's mind; he is claiming that everybody (or virtually everybody) can hear his thoughts - so your protocol does not fit the asserted claim.

He also asserts that occasionally, he can hear other people's thoughts - but that is not the power he wants to test.

This statement from you surprises me, Ladewig, in view of the fact that your own hit rate is equal to 100% in this thread!! (one answer given, with a testimony, and it was correct - and you're welcome to give more). I hope you're not taking too much psychiatric drugs. Protect your talent!

The odds of me hitting the correct number with a single guess are 25%. Again, that is NOT evidence of telepathy. There is no evidence of telepathy in this thread.

ETA: Too much psychiatric drugs? No, I am taking only the dosages prescribed by my psychiatrist. Not too much, not too little, but, like the baby bear's bed, just right.

If you believe my posts are a derail, then feel free to report them to a JREF board moderator. That can be done by going to the post in question and clicking the small exclamation point in a triangle on the left side of the screen.

Because I do not think they are a derail, I will continue to offer that advice until directed otherwise.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

A medical doctor might be a very good option at this point. Please consider it.

I have received a number of testimonies, apparently confirming the existence of such a strange phenomenon (note however that I am not claiming that people are hearing all my thoughts). See for example:
... I do indeed have ESP, and know for a fact that he wrote 2!
,
or
I am seeing a 4 very clearly. It's almost as though I had written it myself.
.
(these numbers were correct, and verified by MD5 hashes. Loss Leader is a moderator on this forum)

Granted, that didn't test Michel's claim, but it indicated that nobody can hear my thoughts (or at least not willing to admit it for the enticement of a grand). But of course I didn't really need to make the offer since if people could hear my thoughts they would know all my passwords and could empty my bank account at will.

I wonder how Michel protects his passwords.

Those "testimonies" are easily explainable by random chance. What about all the people who picked the wrong number?

It can never produce good results, even when you finish tampering with them after you know the answers.

You want a sneak peak at the answers already, do you?

...
This argument has already been tried by Adman (about another answer), but I think it is incorrect, because you had a possibility of answering "I don't know", and yet you chose to answer:
I concentrated on the assigned task and an image of a brightly lit piece of paper appeared, the circled number on it was xx.
...
It may be noted that this answer (with "brightly lit") was rather friendly sounding. If you are an ideal participant, the only reason why you answer something else than "I don't know" in a telepathy experiment, is the fact you did perceive something telepathically.
