New PEW News IQ Quiz

11/12. Was looking for the "Who Cares?" option on the booming economy in North Dakota*. Fortuitous on one question as I still had a tab open to an article with a headline saying "U.S. Unemployment Falls to 5.8%", because I was thinking of bumping the old unemployment thread to see how the conservative spin doctors would respond. Oh, and Yellen was a "process of elimination" thing. I know the Greenspan's retired and know what the other two do, so it had to be the only remaining name.

*ETA: Not being facetious. A "boom" in North Dakota, with a population of 700,000 is an accurate but insignificant claim. If those resources were found in northern California, the little bit of business they drew to the state could be offset a distribution center closing in Carson. 700,000 is less than the population of all but one of the five boroughs of New York City.

Don't be so quick to dismiss the economic significance of this. The US now produces more oil than Saudi Arabia. The population of North Dakota is growing so fast now that they can't build houses, schools and other infrastructure fast enough to keep up with it. Imports of oil are only half what they were in 2005. We imported 12.5 million bpd in 2005, and only 6.2 million bpd in 2013 (in 2014 so far it's even less: about 5.2 million bpd).

This is not an insignificant news story.

11 out of 12. I missed the one about the minimum wage. I've never bothered about it because I only hire illegal aliens when I need work done and pay them next to nothing.

12/12 but I totally guessed at the poverty line question. Canuckian by birth and inclination.

12/12 but these questions were really not that tough if you spend more than 15 minutes listening to npr or reading google news so I'm not sure what the big deal it. Except maybe to point out how utterly uninformed - which is simply pathetic - the use general public really is.
