The new version of Alex Wellerstein's NUKEMAP nuclear detonation simulator is now online.
This version includes better modeling, casualty calculation, fallout simulation and 3D imaging (using Google maps).

Have fun, though currently the server is running slow.

Nice.

Why does China have much larger weapons than anyone else ?

Chinas current ICBM: 5Mt

Largest French warhead: 300kt
W-76 common in UK and US: 100kt
Minuteman III: 350kt
Largest bomb in current US arsenal: 1.2Mt

I guess it's kind of irrelevant since none of those countries are ever going to use them anyway. Still Chinas current bomb is more than 4 times as powerful as the other nations listed bombs. Maybe the other nations have bigger bombs they just aren't listed ?

Detonating the 100Mt USSR bomb on Edinburgh destroys most of central Scotland...

I've just reduced Dubai to a desert with a bunch of empty high-rise buildings and deserted malls.

My next bomb will be used in a location where it will make a noticeable difference.

Generally smaller weapons with more accurate delivery systems are preferred. The Chinese DF5's are technologically obsolete (non-storable fuel means a 1.5-2 hours delay before launch) and few are deployed.
They're being replaced by the DF31 and (when they work) the DF41 series which are smaller, road mobile, solid fuelled missiles with much greater accuracy. These feature far greater accuracy and smaller 'throw weight', some also have multiple warheads.

Most modern nuclear weapons are MIRVs: Multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles. Essentially a lot of nuclear weapons in one single missile that can target different areas. The logic behind this is that the bigger the bomb the more energy is wasted with shock-waves going out into the air and so on.

So by having smaller and more accurate nuclear weapons you can have more targets. For example: rather than targeting the center of a city and hoping you cause enough damage you can target a industrial part of it, the air port, the army base, residential areas, the port and so on. Because of that the weapons become more efficient.

Huh. 1 gigaton basically annihilates North America, and then I guess the radiation and fires kill everybody else.

100 Gigatons just wipes out the place.

Huh....What do you know: The only one of the presets that WONT vaporise me at a citycenter hit (In relations to where I live), is the North Koreans. That will just make me die slowly and painfully over a period of time.......

My thoughts exactly.
First the marathon bombing, now Bieber.

I thought I'd put them out of their misery. And mine.

GPS tracker on the tour bus, then hack the NK's and use one of those while hes on a less populated stretch of road. Then point the Bleibers in the direction of NK. Two problems solved with one nuke...... :D
