New Alabama Governor: "Only Christians are my brothers and sisters"

Robert Bentley, new Republican governor of Alabama, said this on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

"I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became governor ... I became the governor of all the people. I intend to live up to that. I am color blind."

But:

"...anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother."

And the problem w/that is!? Aetheists say worse things than that about Christians (they tend not to bash other religions much because other religions don't have Christ), and from a religious point of view his is right. At least he is honest about it.

He is there to serve the needs of all citizens of his state. If he uses the power of his office to advance the goals of a particular religious faith, he is screwing up.

His message is that he needs the citizens of his state to come around to his way of thionking.

Well it is Alabama, so it could be that his statement literally true- he is directly related to the vast majority of his constituents, and all of them also happen to be Christians.

This is the Republican elected in a gubernatorial race where one of the other candidates for the Republican nomination had an attack ad run against him, basically saying "Don't vote for this guy, he believes in evolution! And that the Bible is only partly true!"

Said candidate's response? "The ad is false! I totally don't believe in evolution! And I believe the Bible is all true!"

The Governor of a state has no business telling non-Christians that they are not his brothers and sisters, at a non-denominational public meeting.

His ability to be equal and fair to all citizens and issues of Alabama, regardless of religious affiliation, is now in question.

I suppose he considers them misguided, wrong, and destined for hell. Just like I view believers as misguided, wrong, and destined to a life of subservience to a fictional concept.

If I hit up "tolerate" at dictionary.com....

Nothing in the speech suggest he is not tolerant. Tolerance is a much lower bar than acceptance.

Religion plays a big role in the governors life. There are two germane questions that matter. First, will religion play a role in how he governs? Of course it will, anyone thinking otherwise is naive or willfully ignorant. Second, can he act on his convictions without it showing? That remains to be seen.
