One of the major power holders in Ukraine's new govt., is called "Svoboda".

It means "Freedom" in English.

The party's former name, was "The Social-Nationalist Party", which is was purposely close to Hitler National Socialist Party, due to their shared right-wing views of extreme nationalism and xenophobia, mostly targeted towards Russians and Jews.

Their ideology and goals include the following:

-Criminal prosecution for “Ukrainophobia"

-Only those born in Ukraine can become Ukrainian citizens, with the exceptions for those who have lived in Ukraine for more than 15 years, know the Ukrainian language, culture and Ukrainian Constitution.

-Renunciation of the 2010 Kharkiv agreements (giving Russia a Navy base in Crimea passed 2015).

-Ban on abortion, except in cases of medical necessity, or rape; and imprisonment from three to seven years for those who violate this ban.

-Criminalization of public promotion of abortions or calls for abortions (by introducing a fine for doing so).

-The restoration of the Soviet practice of indicating ethnic origin on passports and birth certificates.

-Proportional representation on executive bodies of ethnic Ukrainians, on the one hand, and national minorities, on the other.

-Ban on adoptions by non-Ukrainians of Ukrainian children.

-Preferential treatment for Ukrainian students in the allocation of dormitory places, and a series of similar changes to existing legal provisions.

-Abolition of Crimean autonomy.

-Dismissal of employees of state structures who had been active in the Soviet apparatus before 1991.

-An explicit guarantee of accession to NATO within a set period of time.

-Ukraine should again re-acquire tactical nuclear weaponry.

Some more interesting facts:

Late January 2013, Svoboda urged Ukrainians to boycott revised Ukrainian history textbooks and give up the teaching of the Russian language in school, calling Ukrainians "to categorically refuse to study in school the language of the occupier – Russian, as a further reliable means of the assimilation of Ukrainians".[100] On 23 February 2014, following the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, the law on regional languages was abolished, making Ukrainian the sole state language at all levels.

In 2004, party leader Tyahnybok was expelled from the Our Ukraine parliamentary faction for a speech calling for Ukrainians to fight against a "Muscovite-Jewish mafia."[31][39] Svoboda advisor Yuriy Mykhalchyshyn established a "‘Joseph Goebbels Political Research Centre" in 2005, later changing "Joseph Goebbels" to "Ernst Jünger."[2] Mykhalchyshyn wrote a book in 2010 citing works by Nazi theorists Ernst Röhm, Gregor Strasser and Goebbels.[39][86][106] Elsewhere Mykhalchyshyn referred to the Holocaust as a "period of Light in history".

Thirty members of the Israeli Knesset condemned the party in a signed letter addressed to the President of the European Parliament. In the letter the Israeli politicians accused Svoboda of "openly glorifying Nazi murder" and "Nazi war criminals". In May 2013 the World Jewish Congress labelled the party as "neo-Nazi" and called for European governments to ban them.

......are Russian fears of a Neo-Nazi Ukraine, somewhat grounded?

I'm not defending Russia clearly illegal occupation and annexation of Crimea.

But their fears of a Neo-Fascist takeover of Ukraine, which may threaten the rights of non-Ukrainians and specifically Russians, appears to have some weight.

I posted the following in the same minute you posted this thread.

Back in Kiev, today the "Deputy head of the Parliament's Committee on Freedom of Speech", member of Svoboda, showed how qualified he is for the job when he ...

There he assaulted the head of the company Oleksandr Panteleymonov and forced him to write a letter of resignation. Video of this event was published by the Svoboda party press-secretary Alexandr Aronets in his videoblog.

-Renunciation of the 2010 Kharkiv agreements (giving Russia a Navy base in Crimea passed 2015).
A certain Mr Putin seems to have taken care of that small detail. I think they can check off one item of their "to do" list already. They should probably send him a thank you note, while they are at it. :p

It would if there weren't equally powerful neo-Fascist streams in Russia. It's a problem all over Europe, not at all limited to the Ukraine. Svoboda holds a small mandate in the Ukrainian parliament. The vast majority of the new government aren't neo-Fascists or Nazis. As such, Putin's argument holds no weight.

I note that all those pointing to the Fascist strain in the Ukraine Government ignore the much more dangerous Fascist movement in Russia...which has support in very high places.
In fact, I suspect that those who are making this a excuse for not aiding the Ukraine of being just another of the Western Water Carriers for Putin.

Fascists? They're the worst! Almost as bad as those damn Commies!

Not much difference in the end between Fascism and Communism...though it is really hard to get some people on the Left to admit that.

But the Fascist chicks are hotter, so there's that ...

Just as hard as getting some people on the Right to admit that.

FYI, CE, that video's been removed for copyright violation. The original holder have their own copy?

You think like Svoboda. Just sayin'.

Yuri Levchenko, fast-talking Svoboda spokesman:
We in no way espouse Naziism, Naziism, in fact we fight against Naziism and for us, Naziism and Communism are, uh, two sides, uh, of the same coin...
and something about the two ideologies teaming up in WWII (the fighting was fake, I guess) to kill millions of Ukrainians. That's the grade of thinking we're dealing with here.

As we can see, the former National Social front Banderaistas fight Nazzism BY fighting the other side of its coin - the Commies. Party and ideology to be outlawed if they have their way, minds reclaimed with the already created Lustration Committee (also, look up Rotislav Vasilko for other examples of how the anti-Nazis deal with Commie party officials).

Svoboda's leader and others have also railed about the Moscow-Jewish mafia running Ukraine, another part of the Nazi-Commie thing. This they still mean to fight.

Thus Svoboda's way of fighting Naziism is surprisingly similar to how Adolf Hitler fought Naziism back in the day.

And Svoboda is only one part of it. There's also Right Sector, scarier yet, and Fatherland, bigger than either and with some scary folks included (Parubiy, for one). And then, possible splinter groups from the even more extreme parties that formed into these larger parties. They'll be tough to get back out of power.

Weird thing to have, need more details.

-Only those born in Ukraine can become Ukrainian citizens, with the exceptions for those who have lived in Ukraine for more than 15 years, know the Ukrainian language, culture and Ukrainian Constitution.

Reasonable, worked well in the Baltics. Given what's going on now, it's the logical thing to do.

-Renunciation of the 2010 Kharkiv agreements (giving Russia a Navy base in Crimea passed 2015).

The only logical thing to do, seeing as Russia clearly overstepped the boundaries of the treaty and abused it to harm Ukraine.

-Ban on abortion, except in cases of medical necessity, or rape; and imprisonment from three to seven years for those who violate this ban.

-Criminalization of public promotion of abortions or calls for abortions (by introducing a fine for doing so).

Meh.

-The restoration of the Soviet practice of indicating ethnic origin on passports and birth certificates.

Not all that uncommon. Turkish ID cards still display religion, for example.

-Proportional representation on executive bodies of ethnic Ukrainians, on the one hand, and national minorities, on the other.

Could be good, could be bad - depends on details.

-Ban on adoptions by non-Ukrainians of Ukrainian children.

Meh.

-Preferential treatment for Ukrainian students in the allocation of dormitory places, and a series of similar changes to existing legal provisions.

Need more details, is Ukrainian citizenship, or ethnicity?

-Abolition of Crimean autonomy.

Seeing as what it was abused for, it's the proper thing to do.

-Dismissal of employees of state structures who had been active in the Soviet apparatus before 1991.

Germany did similar, it turned out to be a good idea.

-An explicit guarantee of accession to NATO within a set period of time.

The only logical thing to do, seeing as guarantees weren't sufficient.

-Ukraine should again re-acquire tactical nuclear weaponry.

The only logical thing to do, seeing as it was already invaded by a nuclear state on it's border. The one guaranteeing it's territorial integrity.
