Whether this man is ill or not, you'd think someone in charge might have taken a little trouble to check his fitness to do the job in question.

The vetting of a sign language interpreter who got within three feet of world leaders including President Barack Obama during Nelson Mandela's memorial was being investigated Thursday after organizers admitted they were unaware of his violent history of schizophrenic episodes.
Thamsanqa Jantjie, 34, was accused of gesticulating gibberish during Tuesday's service. Members of the deaf community said his movements did not resemble any recognized form of sign language and some groups accused him of being a "fake."

I would have thought Obama's security would have more sense than to let anyone close to him who has not been carefully vetted by their own people. This is very scary, not funny in the least.

Well it is simple to explain really.
Human behaviour is unpredictable.

I heard the schizophrenia excuse this morning and I don't buy it, I think this guy as been getting away with a long con for awhile now and no one has been able to call him on it.

If it was schizophrenia then the CIA did a piss poor job of protecting the president.

This link is a great introduction to how sign language works. It includes a several-minute clip of a press conference by Mayor Bloomberg about Hurricane Sandy with a (real) sign interpreter working next to him. She is enormously animated, including mouthing words and making faces. Some of it is actually funny; when the mayor says "we just don't know," she taps her forehead and rolls her eyes; when someone asks about pollutants in the water, she makes a sour face; when someone asks about the water receding, she flutters her hands downward. She's in constant motion. Any expert would have spotted the Mandela fraud in about two seconds.

I noticed it in a very short clip while watching it and thought it was very weird. And I am not a signer.

Next time they should just follow that the logical conclusion, and use Interpretive Dance.

There's nothing funny about it, but I'm sure everybody on that stage (and likely in the whole stadium) went through metal detectors and bag inspections. Security people pretty much assume everybody is a potential threat.
