Did anyone just see Neil DeGrasse Tyson rip it up on Bill Maher tonight. I don't think I could have imagined a better use of his spotlight. And with Maher being sympathetic.

It was beautiful.

It was cathartic.

His comment about the housing crisis in particular.

I like Tyson, not so much Maher...but I'll try and watch it sometime this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up.

The thing that I find so frustrating is that Tyson was saying we should keep NASA so we could inspire scientific literacy in the U.S.

We have Obama saying we need to have our "Sputnik Moment," which I have always heard discussed as when the U.S. decided it was going to kick ass in science.

And, at least in my state (Texas), we are undergoing massive budget cuts in education.

Does anybody know if their state is undergoing massive budget cuts in education?

Yeah, Florida. Although I am not so sure it's budget cuts as much as it's making up for last years 3.5 billion dollar shortfall.

On the OP, I missed it because I wasn't home but heck, I would even watch Bad Girls Club if Neil DeGrass Tyson were on it. He's just got such a winning personality.

I live in South Carolina and I'm pretty sure that they will actually outlaw education any day now.

Most everything Neil DeGrasse Tyson says publicily is worth watching.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look for the video. :)

I am sad to hear that so many states seem to be facing these kind of budget cuts. Though there are a ton of systemic problems in elementary education.

I have been working as a 5th grade teacher for the last 2 years in Irving (a suburb of Dallas) and what I have seen is really disillusioning.

Arizona here. Education was cut last budget. And as anyone that reads the news knows less educated Arizonans are the last thing we need.

My favorite part was when he interjected himself into the "conflict of interest" argument regarding judges. Thinking like a scientist, he recognized that there were two distinct points being made and that it would be worthwhile to distinguish them.

He was met with silence by the panel. As if to say: "We're trying to score cheap political points here, why are you dragging logic into this?"

I have yet to watch or read anything of Tyson's stuff personally, mostly I've seen his name mentioned here and there on forums et al. So, he seems to be a reknowned astronomer (he's an astronomer yes?). Bill Maher I've watched a bit, he can be funny but he's usually only able to be witty through sarcastic oneliners, and that gets old after a few minutes of repetition.

He's an astrophysicist and the current director of the Hayden Planetarium.

Yeah, I chuckled at that. <chuckle smiley>

And when the talk turned to racism and one of the panelists mentioned "N-word", Tyson interjected in mock innocence, "Nuclear?":D

If he went to the Middle East as a conciliator, I have a feeling he'd have the Jews and Arabs hugging each other in no time.

QFT, and condolences for your geography. I was born in that state, but was forced to move. My parents were quite strict about education and sought out states with elementary schools.

No, he would just have them both agreeing that they thought he was a presumptive a*****e.

Which he is.

He just also happens to be right most of the time.

Holy People's Republic, Batman, all the videos of Tyson on Maher's show have been removed from the Web!

Anyone got a good link?

Man, that was tough.... but here it is .... and in FULL SCREEN High Quality!!! :)

(Well uh.... after having watched it I have to say it is only an excerpt and Tyson is one of the people who does the least talking in this video)
