IMO, meh. Tyson does a PETA ad, Bill Nye pimps for "activeion" woo, Shermer gives god-awful presentations at conventions. We all have our flaws.

yeah I should have mentioned Tyson is not a vegetarian himself...though in an interview i heard w/ him about lobsters he does say he boils them head first...how compassionate

I can't find anything in that interview that is problematic.

Funny they should have a picture of a happy puppy dog sleeping under a car after shots of animals in cages. But of course PETA does not see any difference.

I looked that up last night. It's an interview with Jon Hodgeman. Tyson says he removes the rubber cuffs, giving them a fighting chance of pinching him. *******.

Is he aware that they fund people who firebomb science facilities?
Is he aware that they are against ALL animal testing?

I've read a lot of famous people and experts talking about how they sometimes have to think about if speaking with group X means they support that group.

PETA is a big organization... unfortunately they have more than enough resources to continue doing "batty stunts" (didn't they recently want to establish a monument for cows killed on roads?) as well as take measures that are actually reasonable (like encouraging animal adoption.)

There are probably dozens of more reasonable, moderate "animal welfare" groups in the U.S. Neil DeGrasse Tyson could have given his support to any one of them. Even if those other groups don't have the profile of PETA, at least he would know that he's not giving any sort of support to a group that is ultimately counterproductive.

There should be a point where an organization steps so far over the line that people should be unwilling to associate with it regardless of what goals its trying to accomplish. For example, supporting the Klu Klux Klan's charity work would be a mistake regardless of how many people it might help, simply because the organization holds such racist views. In my opinion, PETA should be avoided in pretty much the same way because of its support for terrorist activity and its anti-science stances.

It reminds me of a Simpsons episode, where Homer is trying to decide who to vote for for Mayor. He's trying to decide if he should vote for Sideshow Bob. "I'm against his Bart-killing policy. But then again I am for his Themla-killing policy".
