NDAA - What does it mean?

Hi I have heard a lot from extreme lefties about this bill and that it means we are one step closer to a police state, it's a huge violation of human rights, and plenty of what appears to be FUD.

I am no expert at this, and just would like a sober interpretation of what it means to us Americans and to people around the world.

Thanks for reading.

We pass an NDAA each and every year. It is what authorizes defense spending.

I know that, I am more interested in the new controversy regarding the allowing of indefinite detention of US citizens. The ACLU doesn't like it by the looks of it. I wanted the opinions of you guys.

Civil liberties are woo. Indefinite detention and assassination without due process is good government.

Got it?

Great.

I completely disagree.

I'd be interested in hearing your refutation of NYT journalist Hedges' and Noam Chomsky's lawsuit against Obama over the NDAA.

It sets a bad precedent. Slippery slope indeed, but do I buy the idea that journalist and dissenters (or even "sympathizers") will be jailed indiscriminately because of this law? Not at all. Could it theoretically be used in that way given the correct contortions? It's likely. Regardless I would support updated language that clearly precludes the detention of American citizens.

The concern is the provision that was passed on December 31 of last year, that authorizes the president to detain indefinitely any person suspected of supporting al Qaeda.

At the very least, it means that Obama's pledge to protect civil liberties in the war on terror was a lie.

Just to be clear, you have to materially support al Qaeda. It's a big difference.

You have to be suspected of materially supporting al Qaeda. The problem I have is that Congress and the president have seen fit to circumvent the inconvenient Bill of Rights, which would guarantee you an opportunity to confront your accusers in a court of law.

The ability to address your accusers (in front of peers) is woo.
As long as you only associate with right-thinking people, you're fine.

Just nevermind the Bill of Rights. They weren't written for this age of perpetual war. The "World Peace" of the past will never happen again. Because we can't afford it.

Kellyb war is coming and our enemies expose themselves everyday. Liberty is all that matters. A life without it is not worth living (to me at least). I believe we need to get organized and prepared. I began running again, getting back into shape. Its funny, when I was in the military I despised PT thought it was such a hassle but now I do it for a purpose and for my family because I believe there will be blood in the streets and I need to be able to do everything I can to help my family survive.

You should see the vacant blocks in Detroit, you could sleep in the road and not be bothered. Houses vacant as far as you can see. Every strip mall has empty spaces. Rush hour seems to be a thing of the past recently. Everyone seems so distracted and unaware of the decay.

I think I am going to plow the empty lot a block away from my house where they stopped building condos years ago and plant a garden. I guess I feel like poking the bear and seeing who comes and tells me that the land would be better filled with tall grass and weeds for the summer.

To me the NDAA is a declaration of war on the American Citizens by the United States Government.

I am preparing for war and I suggest you all do the same.

I get why you're angry, because I am too. It's clear that we've been sold out by a venal class of politicians who would trade any and all of our liberties in exchange for lining their pockets.

The last time I was in Detroit, I was pretty disturbed at what I saw. It's not an exaggeration to say the city has turned into a war zone.

I approve of your idea for civil disobedience, but I also hope you'll keep your cool should you run into trouble. We could all use some attention drawn to urban blight if you can, but an ugly incident will help no one, your family least of all.

The entire Detroit government is corrupt now and an emergency fund manager is being appointed.

When something is killing you, its probably best that you stop. If you are spending too much money then its probably best to stop and re-evaluate.

There is a tent city south of detroit along I-75 hundreds of people living there I think we should figure out a path to these vacant blocks in detroit and have these people living in tents live there.

So much waste for so little benefit. Its all so sickening.
