I look back at that time and just shake my head at my optimism in corporate bosses who value politics above all else. Oh well live and learn.

You'd think I would have learned that from previous experience *smacks self on head*

Well, I didn't get the job I wanted, but I do start a new one tomorrow with an engineering company. It may be temporary, which is okay, since it's not the kind of work I want to be doing. At least there will be educated people working there. I will have a few more options in a bit, so I can decide to stay if they want to keep me, or move on to even better things.
