I like making web sites. For this January, I've set myself a challenge. I'm going to attempt to make a new web site each day, excluding weekends. It's most likely an impossible task, but it gives me something to aim at.

To make it even more challenging, they will all be dynamic database-driven web sites. I have a few ideas, but I need more. If you have an idea for a web site, let's discuss it in this thread and if it's suitable I'll add it to my list.

Here are some examples of the kind of thing I'm looking for:

Art Gallery: user (artist) accounts; upload and tag images; viewer comments; viewer favourites

Assignment Manager: user (student) accounts; course or subject details; assignment details, due date etc; progress and status ('started', 'done', 'waiting on Jules to give me that book', etc); when submitted; grade

So, what do you think? Am I crazy for even thinking this is possible?

Post your ideas and let's find out!

Wow, that's an ambitious project. I'm a coder, but hate building websites, so if you dig it, more power to you.

I've been writing down website ideas for a while now, that I would like to see. If any of these fit your bill, feel free to have at them...

1. AMATEUR FANTASY LEAGUE: I play on a local (very amateur) soccer team. It would be great to have a site where I could set up a "fantasy team" based on our own amateur team, entering the names of everyone, betting on who's going to score/etc., and then entering the statistics after a game and keeping a scoreboard. Obviously this would not need to limited to soccer.

2. COMPETITION LADDER: Similarly, we have a ping pong table at the office, and it would be great to have a way to enter results of our daily matches and keep a ladder of rankings. Again, obviously not limited to ping pong.

3. MENU SCANS: A website that stores scans of take-away menus from various restaurants for easy reference, mapped onto (say) a Google maps display. Could be extended to any business with a service menu (e.g. masseuse, dry cleaner, etc.)

4. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL YOUR LIFE? Another Google maps-based website that tracks the lives of users and famous people as to their physical location for their entire life. So, you'd have a slider along the bottom, going from age 0 to their current age or whatever age the person died, and moving the slider would move the marker on the map to show where the person was at that point of time. (The data would be built up in a wiki-ish fashion, with detail being built up over time.) So, you could track the life of George W. Bush, Jesus, David Attenborough, Sarah Palin, the four Beatles, etc...

5. WIKICONCERT: I believe that we're losing some history, much in the way the early TV shows didn't save their tapes. I would love to see a wiki that kept track of every concert by every band -- through history, and ongoing. It would log the location, line up, set list, trivia, bittorrents, etc., and have a way to leave "I was there!" sorts of comments.

That'll do for now. Have them on my desk by Friday :-)

I know next to nothing about sports and fantasy leagues, so to do this one properly someone would have to spec it out for me and I'd have to spend time trying to understand it.

Well, this one seems feasible.

An interesting idea. People could take a photo of a menu with their phone and upload it.

Another interesting idea. I like this one. Uses all the technology too. Javascript slider, AJAX for database requests and UI updates, google maps mashup, this one has it all. This might be a weekend project.

I really like this one! I've added it to my list. :)

I'm actually in the process of developing a new website (or rather, hiring someone to design it for me ;)) that will give people the chance to do a cultural assessment online. One of the long-term things I'd like to do with this is develop a database of all participants, and be able to sort them according to various demographic details (for example, get average results of all Chinese participants between 25-30 years old). Initially won't be so many people, but expect to build it up to several thousands over a few years.

Don't know if this is something you'd be interested in...

As I'm giving myself a one-day deadline for each site, it can't be too complicated, and would need to be fully specced. I'm also not that interested in projects that are specific to one business or organisation, but rather more general types of sites that can be used by anyone.

I have most of a database with weird "holidays" and stuff in it. It's always been my plan that you could pick a date and find out what holiday (i.e., Brownie Day, or Pistachio Day, or Wear-Your-Galoshes-To-Work Day). It's also got my family's birthdays and anniversaries in it, 'cause I was going to hook it to my family website someday...

In my plans, it would pull up a different background or picture or link to more information about the day, but I don't have that kind of info gathered yet.

I like this one. It's basically a calendar that you can annotate with text entries, images and links. Google calendar probably does that already, but I think I'll add it to my list. :)

If Google calendar does that, I don't know how.

You want my partial database (which I can strip of the personal stuff if you like)?

Okay, you got some stuff in there that looks like fun!

I'll get you my database (it's in Access), soon, I promise. Christmas cookies (and work, oh yeah) have higher priority at the moment... :(

It starts today! :)

Today's web site is blogs. I'm going to build a web site where people can register and create their own blog. I just got up, so I need breakfast and coffee etc. Will start in an hour or two.

Thanks, I got your database. Your site is scheduled for the 13th. :)

In the case of chain restaurants that have such info available, linking nutritional data would be good here, too. That way, it might be simpler to pick a restaurant with better fit for such needs as low-sodium, low-fat, low-carb, etc.

Hi, how is it going?

I see from your site that the Blog Engine is 100% complete. Is it possible to look at it?

Cheers

Well, my original plan has gone awry, but for a good reason! I had planned on taking January off, and devoting my time to this very challenging project, but I've recently picked up too much work from a couple of my main clients. I wasn't expecting to have much work on this month, as most of my clients are either shut for summer holidays are otherwise not spending.

I can't knock them back, so I've had to reschedule the sites I'm planning to build. I was supposed to have done a few already this week, but I've been stuck doing client work instead. I'm still aiming at completing all the sites this month.

The http://www.samedaysites.com/ web site itself uses a precursor version of the blog engine. The "Status Reports" you saw on the Blog Engine page are an example of that.

I hadn't intended doing much with the Blog Engine, but it turned out so well I'm going to register a domain name for it and launch it as a blog service for people to use. I don't expect it to compete with blogger and other existing services, but it might be nice to get a few people using it.

I have to get back to some real work now, but I'll launch the Blog Engine over the weekend.
