Mueller has cleared Cohen publicly testifying before Congress.

Cohen tweeted "Buckle up!"

Oh, man...this is going to be gooooooooood!

Seriously, does Cohen have Secret Service protection? There were enough nutters out there who thought someone with a gun should "take care of" Stormy Daniels; imagine how they must feel about Cohen!

"I'm sorry, but Mr. Cohen couldn't show up to testify today, but he accidentally brutally stabbed himself in the stomach while shaving."

Cohen's testimony won't include anything Russia related, but I bet we get to hear a lot about his shady/corrupt business dealings and personal behavior.

He absolutely does need protection, because I would not put it past some MAGA knuckleheads out there to try to kill him... it only takes one lucky shot.

We've already seen attempts to bomb prominent Dems and Dem backers. They only failed because the bomber was as stupid as he was delusional.

I wouldn't bet on that. I think he'll get asked plenty of questions about the Trump Tower Moscow deal, and he won't be holding anything back.

I was referring to Cohen's public testimony; things we can hear. He could discuss Russia but behind closed doors but not in public.

There may be some topics at the hearing that are off limits. House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, who has also been seeking testimony from Cohen, told CNN that Cohen's lawyers indicated Cohen could not discuss the Russia investigation publicly, and his panel wants Cohen to testify behind closed doors.

Why wouldn't it include Russia? I've heard congresspersons on TV already saying they are eager to ask him, under oath, whether he did or did not visit Prague. What Cohen's lawyers want is not what matters.

Actually, it does matter. Cohen has a 5th Amendment right. He also has a cooperation agreement with Mueller. If Mueller would prefer he doesn't talk about Russia, Cohen is likely not to give testimony on it. If Mueller says jump, he's going to say how high And then jump!

Sure, but he has to assert the Fifth in response to specific questions, and only if his answer would incriminate him, not somebody else. He doesn't get to just say "You guys can't ask me about that." And the Democrats probably wouldn't get in Mueller's way, but I'm pretty sure they could order Cohen to testify if they want to. Mueller is part of the executive branch; the legislative branch doesn't need his permission to conduct an investigation.

True.
Cohen could say that Mueller doesn't want him to answer certain questions, but if pressed he would have to do so anyway (or risk being held in contempt).

This gets into an area of law where I'm really wildly guessing... But I'd be surprised if there weren't other mechanisms for Cohen to use to avoid breaking his agreement with Mueller.

It may be that disclosing particular information to the public is a crime in itself and congress does not have the authority to order a crime be committed. For instance they probably couldn't legally order a witness to disclose classified information to the public, that would be a violation of law.

I could be wrong, but I assumed that Mueller is the one who put the kibosh on the topic of his investigation. It the congress critters didn't agree, he wouldn't have pencil-whipped him into testifying.

I can't find any reference to this, though. Does anyone have any sources for the various contentions?
