MY JOKE BACKFIRES

Reader Roger Labbe — along with some 60-odd other readers! — pointed out that James Van Praagh — and I — were seemingly rather ignorant of the facts about Chandra Levy. He wrote:

I know where Chandra's remains are, too! Or, at least I know where they were. They were found in May, 2002, after all, in a park in DC. http://archives.cnn.com/2002/US/05/22/levy.body/

I bet you are just as dumbfounded as I am to find that Van Praagh somehow wasn't able to detect this.

Well, I thought readers would see through my mention of this, and that everyone would be very much aware of the fact that Chandra's body was found long ago and finally buried in Modesto, California. I was being facetious; sorry it didn't get across that way. Apologies.

Though the crime is still unsolved, despite the massive efforts of all those powerful psychics out there, I have an idea that people like Van Praagh won't be of any help at all. And that Howard Stern show might well have been a repeat; I suspect that it was.

============================

Here's the critical thinking part: Randi tried, and failed dismally to make a joke about a murder. Additionally, he failed to do his research. Oh well, we all screw up from time to time.

If you respond to this I look forward to your KoolAid flavored bodily fluids in the form of a facial from the true-believer circle-jerk. If you don't respond, that suggests that you understand that no one is perfect.

I know what I would prefer.

Teabag420- Would you mind clarifying this sentence? I'm sorry, but I don't understand what it means at all.

Ignorance can be bliss. Dial back to Guyana in the late 70's for starters. As for the rest, you're on your own.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're all members of the Randibot cult. No minds of our own. Been there. Heard that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jonestown. Yes, I get the reference. It's the meaning of the sentence I'm asking you to explain.

Look at the sentence that follows.

So, you leave us poor, dumb saps in the mud, while you are climbing your pedestal?

Gotcha.

Okay, I will make a special exception for you, and read to you.

"If you don't respond, that suggests that you understand that no one is perfect."

What if we just want to up our postcount? And since you responded, does that mean you'll soon have Kool-Aid flavored bodily fluids?

Yes, I read it the first time.

So, if people dare criticize your POV, or even respond to it, they are automatically Randibots, ready for the Kool-Aid? What kind of stupid, narrowminded attitude is that?

You wanted to have your say, but you did not want people to respond. You wanted a soap box, but a quiet audience. That, my friend, is the very definition of a fanatic - one that is ready to dispense the Kool-Aid. You are so afraid that people should challenge you, that you have to paint them as drones in advance.

Tough titty, Teabag. That dog don't hunt 'round these woods.

If you don't want discussion, don't open threads, or even participate in them. If you want to open threads to call people names, don't blame people for thinking you are a bigoted fool.

That's hilarious.

What a ******* child.

hmmm, I guess I really like it when skeptics admit they made a mistake.

Also, they don't cry and say they have asked God's forgivness and hope the rest of the cult (sorry congregation) will also forgive them.

I don't mind the forgivness part, it's the tears that get me (just a personal peeve).

If he's a cult leader he needs a bigger house and fancier car though. And a lot of wives. I know Penn has said that when he gives up magic he's opening a cult. I think being a cult leader is way underrated.

Now, are you willing to admit that comparing the horrible suicides and murders that took place in the '70s are trivialized by your comparing their sorry situation to the sorry situation of most JREF members? I've met many a JREF member, and they all seem to have nice jobs, cars and don't allow Mr.Randi to sleep with their wives and daughters. Mr.Randi does not have this cult thing down at all.

Poor old deluded Teabag.

The point is that Teabag could find LOTS of skeptics here who disagree vehemently with Randi on some subjects. In a cult, that would be NOT ALLOWED! And Randi invites and accepts criticism and correction. In a cult, that would be NOT ALLOWED! And Randi doesn't dictate the morals and political direction of the individuals here. In a cult, that would be NOT ALLOWED! And Randi doesn't demand allegience or threaten expulsion if we disagree. In a cult, that would be NOT ALLOWED!

In fact, all in all, Randi's idea of how this forum works is far more like a free-thinking and open democracy than, say, George Bush's administration would like to allow for the USA.

Oh poop, Teabag. You dun got it REEL rong. Shucks.

oh Zep you are right! Let's not forget those Xian members of JREF (myself included!). Why Mr.Randi tolerates us is beyond me!

I disagree vehemently with Randi about whether or not magicians should reveal their tricks, if those tricks are used by psychics etc. I think they should, Randi thinks otherwise.

And that's that. Not much of a cult, is it?

Ummm, we haven't actually told him about that yet. So SSSHHHH! He might strike us ALL down...

Applying the "unspoken assumption" logic current on the Monty Hall Problem thread to this last paragraph leads one to disturbing conclusions.
