"Her answer was always that any miserable sinner deserved to be given a chance to do good," Sebba said. "She argued that Jesus always offered redemption, and no sinner was beyond redemption."

In McGuire, Mother Teresa encountered a challenge to that belief. After his return to ministry in 1994, McGuire would see eight new abuse allegations lodged against him by boys' families.

Just remembered Hitch isn't around to comment and it feels like someone punched me in the heart. I'd like to come up with something as brutal as "thieving Albanian dwarf" right now but I'm just too disgusted.

Keep on truckin'

Why would supporting RCC policy put her canonization in jeopardy?

But isn't this what christianity is all about.

This is the basis of my argument that Christian Salvation Is Heinously Unjust

Nah, make her a saint. There are a heap of scoundrel saints already, add another and totally degrade the entire club.

Yes it is. At least that's how I understood it when I was a Christian.

Her actions were consistent with a belief that all 'sin' is equally repulsive, all people are sinners, and so a paedophile is no worse than a liar, thief or whatever.

The problem, of course, is that some 'sins' cause harm to others. Protecting the interests of the sinner over the person/people sinned against ought to be reprehensible to a person regardless of any philosophical view about the nature/inevitability of 'sin'.

To me this implies RCC-insiders are more concerned about the reputation of the organisation than any individual causing harm, or being harmed by one of its agents.

If a 'Saint' can include a person who protects the interests of an organisation over victims of sexual abuse - and especially when those victims are children - then so be it. Let the world see the RCC in all its glory.

This is not restricted to the RCC, but is standard operative procedure for most organisations, as illustrated recently by the Penn state U. debacle, particularly the sanctification of some of the enablers ...

Of course, it is particularly vile coming from an institution that pretends to have the final word in matters of morality ...

I think you came up with a brutal enough comment despite your disgust.

Oh I don't know.

How about what I think about "Mother" Teresa (spit)?

She was a lying, mean, hypocritical, cruel, prevaricating, deceitful bitch who, if it existed, would be roasting in Hell right now.

YMMV & etc.

Actually, that's almost SOP for institutions claiming to guard "morality." Their own odd definitions of morality have a tendency to override what actually qualifies. This would explain ministers who bang the wives of their members, or the financial improprieties of others.

Sounds like a perfect Catholic saint.

Ole Agnes fits right in with the recent behavior of the church as well as the historical behavior of its saints.

Oh you paint the wizened old pariah in such a good light. She was a pestiferous, vile and ugly of soul witch that finally questioned her evil ways:
I call, I cling, I want — and there is no One to answer — no One on Whom I can cling — no, No One. — Alone ... Where is my Faith — even deep down right in there is nothing, but emptiness & darkness — My God — how painful is this unknown pain — I have no Faith — I dare not utter the words & thoughts that crowd in my heart — & make me suffer untold agony.
So many unanswered questions live within me afraid to uncover them — because of the blasphemy — If there be God — please forgive me — When I try to raise my thoughts to Heaven — there is such convicting emptiness that those very thoughts return like sharp knives & hurt my very soul. — I am told God loves me — and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul.
Honestly, I sometimes wish I believed in god(s), just so I could see facilitators of evil, such as she, burn like a lost sausage in a barbecue.

While that might make you feel pretty good for a few moments, the truth is far more satisfying: That they will close their eyes, and never reopen them, ever again. That their final moments will be filled with the realization that all their machinations and cowardice accomplished nothing, save the misery of others, and that they are responsible for it.

And there is no forgiveness. Ever.
