Mitt Romney attacked for speaking French

Sorry, is it just me or is the US turning into a joke at election time?

So far I've seen one candidate (Huntsman, my personal pick from the Republicans) being attacked for having associations with China and speaking fluent Mandarin, something I would consider a massive boon, and now another candidate (my second favourite) being attacked because he can speak French, another language with huge worldwide usage?
 
On The Daily Show just last night they showed a clip of Gingrich speaking Spanish.
 
The second ad in the series has Mitt adding 12 and 16 together and coming up with the correct answer with the tagline "If Mitt can do simple addition then what will he do with your guns?"
 
I believe they ran a radio ad attacking his ability to speak French back in Iowa too. IIRC the angle they took was "how can we trust someone that speaks other languages?" Implying that an ability to speak French must mean Romney would just sign over US sovereignty to France.
 
Republicons hate intellectuals. Intellectuals have this obsession with reality that just does not advance the party dogma.

Sad enough that politicians resort to this kind of crap - even more depressing is you know there are people out there that buy it.

I'm waiting for Rick Perry to start attacking candidates for being able to speak English.
 
In 2004 John Kerry was attacked by the right for 'looking French'; so this isn't new.

I doubt it. For the subtlety to work, enough voters must have heard about this aspect of Mormonism. It's a very unsubtle appeal to xenophobia and yes, anti-intellectualism.

Also note that Gingrich had accused Romney of being a moderate. And accused is the right term here.

OTOH, I was stunned to hear few days ago Rick Santorum mention (correctly) that some European countries now have more social mobility than US. Naturally, Santorum attributed it to US' "moral deterioration" and did not go so far as to say we may have something to learn from these European countries, but still -- that was not something I expected to hear in this campain at all.
