Mitch considered attacking Judd

I am sure that the kind of crap talked about in the McConnell staff meeting goes on all the time in American Politics, by politicians of both parties and both left and right. McConnell was just mistaken
unlucky enough to get caught.Which does not make him any less of a jerk.
I am amazed that McConnell gave this story legs by the demand that the taping be investigated by the FBI.. All it did was give it more publicity, and, frankly, people are not going to have much sympathy for a polticians caught in dirty politics screaming about his opponents using questionable methods. Dumb move by Mitch, really dumb.

Unlucky enough to be caught doing what?
Listening to a presentation detailing information about possible candidates?

People keep making this accusation that it's dirty politics, but it isn't. None of this was private information. ALL of it was information that Judd put in the public sphere herself, voluntarily. So on what basis can this be called "dirty politics"?

The only actual dirty politics here was the eavesdroppers.

Engaging in the kind of douchebaggery that every politician engages in, but that the public doesn't like to be reminded that every politician engages in.

And I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the legality of the "overheard it through the door" issue plays out.

I believe that most politicians of all parties engage in collecting information about possible problems with their opponents. But there is no indication that he was going to act on this information (maybe he would have). He heard a presentation that a small portion of was about Judd.

That's like complaining that the sausage you love to eat is made by grinding up the corpses of slaughtered animals. The public may not like to be reminded of this, but it rewards politicians who do it quite consistently. And as I keep pointing out, it's not even much in the way of "douchebaggery". All of this was information Judd herself already made public. It isn't like they were opening sealed divorce records, a practice I don't recall many of McConnell's critics here protesting.

Something tells me that the people who are excusing McConnell's behavior would be all over him if he was a Democrat.

I tend to agree with you.

It isn't like he acted on that and we have no idea if he would have.

I, for one, don't care how many crazy bitches get elected to high office. Or how many mean old men get eavesdropped on by hacks working for sleazy political rags.

Or if that leopard knows I'm eating it's gazelle. Or if I'm taking a nap in a lion den after eating a leopard's gazelle. Get back, lion. You wanna lose that paw? Reach up in my face like that one more time. They'll be calling you Stumpy. Friggin carnivore population explosion around here...

Did that cobra just bite me? Screw it. I don't care. I'll just lie down for a sec. What's the worst that can happen? I die and don't have to eat nasty cobra ass?

Honey badger just don't care any more. It's the drizzles out here. All hot and dry and crawling with all manner of nasties. All I know is, I"m ripping the face off the next jackal that steals my mouse.

Off the meds?

I've been curious about why this McConnell tape was ever released, given that it put the person who recorded it in potential legal trouble, and nothing about their discussion of Judd is unusual, unethical, or even relevant (now that she's not running). So what the hell was the point? Well, I've finally heard a theory that makes some sense: David Corn (the guy who released the tape) was hoping it could prove that McConnell was using legislative assistants to do campaign work on taxpayer dime. That would be illegal. But the transcript that Corn made of the tape is wrong, and what was actually said suggests that the legislative assistants only participated during non-work hours (which is legal). Which still puts the actual contents of the tape back in the land of "so the hell what?"

My guess is that the news media thought this would be as shocking--or at least "have the legs" to the same degree-- as the Romney "47%" tape.

Slow news day? Or perhaps from the media's point of view it's a low cost for a high possible payoff? (It really is hard to predict which stories will take off and which will be gone by the next news cycle--which is down to something like 15 minutes.)

I think the people or person who "leaked" it to the media probably did so out of partisan motivation, so they probably didn't conduct a very rational cost/benefit analysis. (I think it's important to note that their membership in Kentucky Progress doesn't mean that this was done by Kentucky Progress.)

"Curtis Morrison, who resigned as spokesman for the super PAC Progress Kentucky shortly after the recording was made, has not spoken to the press since Mother Jones published the McConnell recording. According to Kentucky Democrat Jacob Conway, Morrison recorded the tape from the hallway outside McConnell’s office, with the help of Progress Kentucky executive director Shawn Reilly.

“My name is Curtis Morrison,” he writes in a post on GoFundMe.com, a crowd fundraising platform. “I have been cooperating with the ongoing FBI investigation into how the recording was made. While my lawyer is charging a reasonable rate, I could use some help, and would be grateful for whatever you can pitch in.”

He wants $10k.

He's up to $185.

Won't you please help this man!!!;)
